Buying the wire to make an extension cord for the welder
I can't seem to find 8/2 or even 10/2 wire with the usual rubber sheath around it to make a short 10'-15' extension cord for my 220v welder, and I don't want to use Romex. I've called a couple welding shops and they sell complete extension cords for well over $100 but I'm not paying that for 15' of wire and two NE50 connectors. I've also checked with Lowes and Home Depot and they of course look at me like I just arrived from Mars. I would even cut the ends off a 220v dryer extension cord and install the right NE50 plug and receptical on it if I could find one longer than 6'.
Where do I buy 8/2 or 10/2 that is covered like an extension cord? I'd rather buy it locally if I can. |

McMaster-Carr has some in the 10/3 Wire Size.

Thanks Sergey, I was trying to think of McMaster-Carr for some other stuff too so I'll just order it from them at the same time. Thanks!

I believe Airgas sells cable by the foot.
Or you could maybe use some of the stuff sold at RV centers. |

Airgas only has the single conductor stuff by the foot. If I don't get an answer back from McMaster-Carr soon on if they also sell the NEMA 6-50R and 6-50P connectors I also need, I'll check out my local RV supply shop for some suitable wiring.

I found 25' of suitable 220v extension cord at my local Camping World RV supply store during lunch for the same price as 17' at McMaster-Carr. I now only need to cut its plugs off and install the 6-50 connectors. That was a good suggestion, thanks Robert!

When I needed an extension cord for the camper, I went to Lowes and bought their 6-4 Yellow Jacket brand construction cord for 220, and cut the ends off for RV plugs.

You guys are killing me, should have gone to Ace. All the parts you need. If you want the female plug vs a box with a receptical ask if they have Forney PN 58401. Hardware stores have to buy this direct from Forney as it is not shipped from their regular warehouse.
