It doesn’t matter under what conditions what broke. The components get stressed out so much over the span of their life, that they just go when they are ready to go. It could happen anywhere, even on flat ground.
Actually, thanks to the will of the rock gods, this is exactly how things break, when you are doing nothing special, rather than when you have six feet of air.
I am not familiar, with the loss of those Warn axles. I think it happen before we got to Johnson Valley. Probably the usual: the U-joint goes first, and that damages the yokes.
