The preliminary report indicates that the earlier switch to the spring-loaded shifter design backfired by letting the engaged spider gears shift while in the locked position under stress, shearing the teeth.
However the locker is not out of the jeep yet, so we'll have to wait for the coroner's office?. err? gear shop report on the official cause of death. The family has given permission to perform autopsy.
The Ox locker served well for what it seems to be 11 expeditions to Johnson Valley, and a great number of deployments to the places where the uneasy life of a traction device took it. Friends remember it as a reliable piece of equipment. The locker will be missed, and remembered.
Even in death the locker did not give up its post. With the last grasp of cautions it froze in the locked position, allowing the jeep to finish the trail. Truly a heroic and selfless act.
Sleep well Ox locker. You deserve the rest.
