I think I have the machine set around 200-250 amps, but really don't ever floor the pedal. High frequency start, I have the option to keep the HF on for arc stabilization, but have only used that feature on aluminum.

Yes, a sharp tungsten. I sharpen them on a belt grinder chucked in a cordless drill. I have finally gotten past the point of dipping my tip every 6" It got me good at sharpening tungsten though... For aluminum I have also been using a sharp tungsten, do you recommend balled for alum?

That "tickle" when you feed the filler into the tungsten has improved my concentration I feel a bit like Pavlovs dog.
