Earplugs are great. Without earplugs or a helmet the wind noise at freeway speeds is deafening. I have a tank helmet, which works nice as far as noises go, but the helmet has padding. The padding is good from the additional safety standpoint, but since there is no way to regulate the headrest position on stock jeep seats, the padding in the back of the helmet keeps my head positioned too far forward. It is uncomfortable on longer trips. So, earplugs and a beanie-hat it is.

I did feel isolated from some sounds, but I had no problem hearing police siren or railroad crossing bells.
