I saw something similar on the National Geographic Channel the other day. On one of the early break-out attempts at Alcatraz, some inmates fashioned a device to spread the bars (they were not of the high strength variety) by using a bolt and a threaded sleeve.
From the pics and the amount of effort that was needed to remove the unit bearings, I can see that rust sucks!
