Time Delay Circuit

Does anybody make an inexpensive automotive time delay circuit? I want to delay the airbags pump on my truck for about a minute after the ignition key is on.

The electronics of such circuit are very basic, I can make one myself, but I am wondering if there is something off-the-shelf available, preferably in watertight vibration resistant implementation.

How about a time delay relay since it won't be cycled often?

A lot of cars have time delay relays on their electric fans now for cool-down... something like that might work...

Thanks. I think I found one that is normaly used to activate a second or third stage of nitrous. Digi-Set Delay Timer (SSAC TDML12DL), it can be set from 0.1 to 102.3 seconds with 10 dipswitches.

Go to you favorite stereo store. They typically have several versions of time delay switches for various applications with ranges from seconds to minutes.

They use them in alarm install to delay certain features.

You can get them that start counting down upon application of voltage or ground or a manual trigger, or a pulse sense.

I'm also pretty sure I have one in the garage if you'd like me to rummage through a drawer and find it so you can test your idea.

I hooked the TDML12DL today, and I am happy to report that it works great.

This accomplishes two things: first, the air compressor for the airbags will not go on in the middle of the night, it is now controlled by the ignition-on power. Second, the compressor will not rob the batteries from power on engine startup, as the start is now delayed for about a minute (adjustable from 0.1 to 102.3 seconds).

The relay does not look waterproof to me, so if you mount it outside, you may need some additional enclosure or something. I had mine mounted inside, with another relay outside.

TDML12DL can handle about 10 Amps by itself.
