I might get in trouble for this

But it's just too cool not to mention.

I just returned from playing touchy feelie with what I consider a near perfect rock crawling tire if you live out here, compete, or just like MT/R's.

I would guess that GY got a little fed up with BFG stealing a little bit of their thunder and decided to get even.

The tire I saw was an MT/R, and the size is just about perfect for a lot of things. 40-13.50-17, coming in at just under the measured tire limit in most competitions.

Great aspect ratio, load range C for pliable sidewalls. Short enough to steer, tall enough to hop ledges. The 17" rim lets you run huge front brakes.

I don't feel too badly about mentioning them since they will be able to be seen on a rig at the upcoming SEMA show.

Before anyone asks, I got no info on availability, pricing, or even if they are a production tire of any kind, even limited. I only know the specs, and that 4 of them exist. I only wish I knew a price.

Nice! That removes my main objection to considering MT/Rs for my next set of tires.

Another great example of why competition between two companies is ALWAYS good for the consumer!

(Now if I could just find a way to get K-Mart to survive I am sure it would motivate Wal-Mart to get even better!)

Can I run them with a BB, Ox u-jonts and Superior axles? Are these tyres better in the mud than the BFG KMs?

They were not on John's jeep or one that he owns.

Normally that would have been a very accurate guess, just not this time.

I have no idea. You could be right on or way off. No way of knowing.

One thing I would like to see in this whole tire war thing is an understanding by the BFG fans that it will be almost impossible for them to buy the tires they see the competitors run.

On the other hand, I have it from a fairly accurate source that the GY competitors run the same tires you and I can and do buy, excepting the 40-13.50-17 due to it's very recent introduction.

Blaine, I am sure that BFG is still working their new tires the same way they were in the mid 80's when I was involved in tire testing with the desert racers.
Being a locally based race team out of Vegas, they tested many new prototypes on the old Mint 400 "rock garden" area. I spent quite a few Monday evenings changing tires on Ivan Stewart's rig and several others. I learned a bit-the tires that the big dog racers run are NOT the same ones you and I can buy at the local BFG tire store. They may appear and look identical but they are different!
A side note-Ultra wheels did the same thing. Remember the Outlaw II wheels? Racers got a different alloy than the ones you can buy at the store! I have watched Ivan deliberately hit a rock ledge head on at high speed-left front rim was "racer alloy" and bent but still held a bead; right front rim was "store quality" and completely shattered like broken glass.
Note: I did not see or participate in any Goodyear brand testing-I do not know if they use one compound or not.

Don, the conversation basically went like this. I asked what the difference was between the tires the competitors use and the ones they sell to the public.

I was told that when he went to the GY warehouse to get new tires, he just walked in and the stock guy looked at his paperwork and pulled his tires from the big racks with all the other tires on them. Said he was fairly certain that they were all the same.

As closely as I have checked when I got one of his warrantied at America's tire, I could see no differences or any tell tale signs of any.

Now that I think about it, I did buy a set of his old competition tires, put the warranties on them and then had one changed out. No difference as far as I can tell. Well, just one, the new one doesn't have a gash in the sidewall.

Free enterprise and the American way. The strong will survive.

On a differenf note, I'm really getting behind the curve on this tire thing. I just sold my 35's and I'm going to 37's. And I'm still going to be playing catch-up .

I hear that one loud and clear. What do you figure it will cost to take a rig like yours or Sergey's from where it is to where it could run the 40's?

New steering with a ram assist
New suspension
New axles in at least HP 60 strength front and rear.
New rims
New t-case
Tons of bodywork
Relocate the Fuel tank

I figure you guys are between 15-20 grand if someone gave you the tires.

Before I get jumped on, I know it can be done tons cheaper, but I am just figuring for the average non-fabricator taking it to some shops that buddies own.

I am also figuring that no way should those tires be run on a TJ without a significant increase in wheelbase.

Question on 17" wheels

Since I'm gonna go to 37's, I'm considering changing to 17" wheels at the same time.

I would love to have some all-out-trick-double-throwdown-special aluminum beadlocks.............but the ole' wallet would not allow it. And, I'm old-school and not sure that I will like 17's.

So, the question is, is there a wheel manufacture that makes a cheep ($50-75 range) steel (Rockcrawler or white spoke) wheel in a 17x9 or17x10? I've looked, but not found any.

Call Ron Schneider at Off Road General Store - 949-770-9300

He had some custom steel wheels (pretty sure they are 17"s and they had special offset to run with portal axles) built for him and they didn't cost a whole lot - it was a local So. Cal shop, I just can't remember the name.

Brain is more than fried right now.

Mike - that name doesn't ring a bell - I thought it was something else, but like I said my brain is shot right now.

40's on a bus.....maybe if you built a tube frame and put bus body panels on it...

Found this and thought that it may be useful.
