More info on the d-35 mystery

The ring gear bolts on the 00 D-35 are about 75 percent larger than on the previous years. No-one really knows why yet. John showed me the carrier with the new bolts and didn't understand it himself.

Sorta leads me to suspect that DC has been upgrading the 35 all along to slow down warranty claims.

Would also lead me to believe that there really is a difference in the tube thickness between years.

You are just another ride in the amusement park of my mind.

For a guy with a Ford 9" you sure are obsessed with the D35. You secretly want one don't you?

Blaine--I think, if he checks, the thread Dia. (7/16" x 20tpi) is the same from 1984 through 2001, but the bolt HEAD size is larger on the factory gears, I noticed this on one of my gear swaps.

The torque specs also changed through the years, Randy's R&P specs vs. FSM is a lot different (on D30, too).

Yeah interesting Blaine, the funny thing is that Jeep also did this on the wacky Aluminum D44's that come in the V8ZJ's and WJ's.

They also did on the viper, I guess their philosophy is the bigger the better

Maybe he is refering to the guy in the TJ who grenaded both his D30 and D35. A young kid had it towed in saying it wouldn't move. The rear had a nice little round steel flap opening where the pin shot out. He said he didn't take it off road, yet the underside was all scraped/caved in and had 2" of dirt and grass on the crossmember/skid. This had to be a dumb one.

MJR- you should have been there for the discussion between myself and the service director who told me the reason that my axleshaft was shorter was because I took it offroad.

The conversation ended with me telling him to take his inspection fee and shove it right up his ass.

Well it was after you snapped the spline end off right ?. Been there done that (Moab 10/01) with my 33's and D35. Well it held up for almost a week.

No snappage. I ran it over 30,000 miles like that. I also ran over the Hammers 25 times, Tabasco Twister, the Rubicon, about 50 local wheeling trips, and anything else I could find.

I just wanted to know what they were going to do under warranty. They started in with the inspection fees, not covered under warranty, etc, etc. I gave them my opinion of their fees and left.

My view is that they should have wanted to know about something as bizarre as two short sides in a jeep axle. I guess I was wrong.

On my non C-clip D35 you can't use two of the same shafts. The left one would bottom out on the center pin if put in the right side and the right one wouldn't reach the side gear if put in the left side.

The dealers are getting abused by the manufacturer on warranty more and more. They just deny to reimburse the dealer if everything isn't just the way they want it. Then the dealer has to redo what is wrong and hope they get paid. It's a pain to deal with and my fingers can't holdup to all the typing to convey all the details.
