LCIR reopening

I'll post more details when I can get to a real computer (on cellphone ) but I just got word Los Coyotes Indian Reservation is reopening for camping and wheeling.
Most but not all trails to be open soon. This was a real favorite of a lot of SOCAL people. Will post more details next day or two. The indians must be missing the fees we paid them with casino profits down.

Jerry, I just spoke with Elizabeth in the LCIR Tribal Office. She mentioned that camping is reopening, but offroading is not.

Seems some wires are crossed somewhere.

Los Coyotes Indian Reservation

While LCIR is now open for camping only limited trails are open for 4WDs at this time. The person at the pay station at the gate can give you a map that shows those trails. Only the trails indicated in Solid Black lines are open at this time.

If you go, please do not go off those trails. Keep in mind that abuse of the rules could cause the Reservation to be closed again.

Note: Only 4WD vehicles are permitted. No Dirt Bikes or Quads.

This is an update I received.

Quote:
Los Coyotes Indian Reservation is open to the public again for camping. Camping is only allowed in the Main Campground in the area near the old stone water tank. Campfires are allowed in the provided fire rings. Some tables are provided as well as porta-potties and some charcoal stoves. The road to the campground is suitable for RVs.

The road to the old Hot Springs Lookout Tower is open as well as Quiet Road and a few other trails. The back part of Los Coyotes , (the best 4 wheeling areas) east and north of the campground is now being leased to a company that is contracting with the US Military for training. Training will be generally be conducted during the week but on weekends there is a possibility that some of the other 4WD trails will be open on a limited basis.

Today a few members of JustRuns and Tierra Del Sol were invited by the firm that now leases the Reservation to pre-run the trails to the east and north of the campground. We had 4 well equipped vehicles on the pre-run.

We proceeded out of the campground to Choke Cherry Valley then down the Old Mine Road as far as we could go. Once down the switchbacks to the creek bed we went as far east as we could. In the creek bed the old trail is pretty much gone and once we got down the creek bed about ? mile we ran into a thicket of 2-3 inch diameter cottonwood trees that have grown up since the last vehicles have gone through the trail. In addition lots of fallen trees and logs blocked us from continuing further.

We then returned up to Choke Cherry Valley and took the trail south to the ruins of the small community of San Ignatio then headed north to 4 Corners. Our goal was to go up Dangerous Road. We managed to make it up Dangerous Road stopping in a few places to move a few rocks and to pick our way through all the way to Hot Springs Road.

Once at Hot Springs Road we headed south to Quiet Road past Jeep Squeeze and on to Left Turn Hill. We all did Left Turn Hill with a bit of effort digging a ramp across a deep ditch at the exit. We then went down the mountain to the campground for a late lunch before
heading home.

We plan on arranging another trip to pre-run more of the trails and will let the guy who has leased the Reservation know the condition of the trails.

Our hope is that we will be able to use some or all of the trails whenever the military training is not going on. In the meantime, the campground is open and a real nice place to camp and the few trails that are open, Hot Spring Rd and the trails marked Alternate Route on the attached map are open to 4 Wheelers. The trails marked with the dashed lines are closed at present. The dark trail on the map that leads to Nelson Camp is Dangerous Road which is quite challenging. I would rate as a 3 to 3+. As of now the trails beyond Nelson Camp are Closed areas.

Bo Neece of TDS and JustRuns has been the contact for the people who lease the Reservation and we appreciate him for getting permission for our Pre-Run.

Thanks for that post Joe. Reading that brought back a lot of good wheeling trips to LCIR. That's how I met all the SD area people. My Jeep has changed quite a bit since I was last down there.

BTW, hello everyone. Haven't posted here in a while.
