Planning on purchasing a tow rig
What do you guys suggest? I only have $3000 to spend and found a good 78 Custom 20 from a reliable source who rebuilt everything but it's only 2wd. After almost getting stuck in the snow at Cougar Buttes with chef (HA! the curse) I'm thinking I should get a 4x4. Right now I'm checking these out:
Rebuilt tranny less than 20,000 F250

Your logic was my logic 4 years earlier and an additional $7500 on top of my purchase price of $4500 for my Suburban. Good luck and have fun wrenching on 2 vehicles

I bought it from this little girl from Oregon who came back after being away for some time. She can't afford the gas it drank so she got a Toyota and did'nt drive it any more. It's got 113,000 miles on it and when she bought it only had 80,000 something miles from some people who kept it on a farm and did'nt drive far in it. 1985 F250 with a 460 in it, $1000. I've been driving it to work this past week to figure out any bugs (not for long the gas is killing me) and it rides sweet.
P.S. Has the tow package.

The only trouble it ever had was the intake manifold. Keep and eye on yours. It's common on that vintage of 460. Also if it's an 8800lb gvr it should be a 3" exhuast without a cat from the factory, part of the reason it kicks butt going up hills! I stll miss that truck to this day

My "inexpensive" tow rig required a new water pump this weekend. I also took the opportunity to install new belts and hoses while I had everything apart. This was after a new power steering pump last November and a new set of ball joints and spindles in September. Fawker runs great though

And that is why I'm glad I got talked into buying a newer, more expensive truck for my tow rig...It's supposed to be my reliable truck to get me home when the Jeep can't :P I was fortunate to be in a situation to afford it. Of course it's led to much bastardization of my Jeep....

it's pretty hard to go on the cheap on a tow rig. The initial cost might be lower, but in case you have to replace stuff constantly:
1. it might leave you stranded when you need it the most (heck, it still happened to me 2 weeks ago when a tranny line blew off ) 2. it'll end up costing more in the end to gain reliability BTW: either the links are dead or the rigs sold, since both of them don't work (for me)
