Since I don't compete at any level it's a hobby for me. I don't keep any score, there are no winners or losers in the groups I wheel with, and there is no specified playing field or time limit. That's me personally.

Overall I think it's a sport for the exact opposite of the reasons I mentioned above. Besides, the sport of rock racing has made better parts for my hobby rig.

I find myself calling it both at times. But to me, I lean more towards calling it a hobby.

When I have to run up a cutline to anchor a winch line I call it a "sport". But most of the time it's a hobby for me.

The wife says obsession...I have to believe that it is just a fun ride around town and a great ride into (and out of!) the backcountry!

Fun!

Yeah, that kinda says it....

To me, a sport involves some sort of physical exertion with a high chance of presperation involved. While I suppose, offroading could qualify if you are winching a lot or stacking rocks, for the most part you are tooling along in your jeep.

If you figure in the modification aspect of wheeling on top of that, I'd have to say it's more of a hobby or a past-time.

I suppose you don't take the same perspective the Russians do about Chess. Part of (nearly) every sports report from the Moscow Evening News.

I'm thinking a hobby, my GF thinks obsession.

I'll add another catagory, Business.

I write-off all Jeep, towing, trip, tools, shop, insurance, fuel (yada, yada), expenses, you get the point.

So, my sport, hobby, obsession is also business related! Best of both worlds .

That was good. Didn't even catch that one.
Never the less, white boys can't dance, unless there's a lot of alcohol involved

When I'm underneath the Jeep grunting and sweating, the heavy black line between hobby and chore grays considerably.

Not true.... I've known and danced with a few white boys that know how to move.

Maybe you just aren't coordinated enough.

Oh as for the topic itself, I think it's a combination and that any stupid wheeler can ruin for the rest of us (thinking back to a thread on JU where a teen was holding a can of beer while croutching on the side of his rolled vehicle).

That is most likely the case. I can get the top half moving and I can get the bottom half moving but not in conjuction with each other

For me, wheelin is a hobby, owning a jeep is a lifestyle... So, since I consider a vehicle ownership a lifestyle, I have to be in the minority, which would make it so that I was living an "alternate" life style... And my jeep is my life partner????

Lightbulb

I finally figured it out. If you drive a manual tranny this is a sport. It meets speaceman's criteria of physical exertion, sweating, etc. If you drive an automatic, this is a hobby.

See, that was simple. There can be no argument. I know I'm right, and in time you will too.

Thumbs up Both

When I'm driving my Jeep it's a hobby, when I'm driving Blaine's Jeep and get his rear diff stuck on a big rock at the waterfall on Sledge Hammer with the front tires hooked on the top ledge and then say: "I don't want to drive anymore", then it's a sport watching Blaine get his Jeep unstuck!
