I have some bad news but i also have some good news.

I took my XJ down a trail about a month ago, the water was about 3ft deep and at one point i put the nose under water and it just sucked up water causing my timing chain and a connecting rod to break. So my XJ is sitting in the garage with the motor out waiting for me to put another 4.0L block i have in there and start rebuilding it. That was the bad news, the good news is I bought a 89 wrangler for a daily now. Soft top and doors. 4.2L 5 speed. I'd love to drive it as it is now and then this winter when im drivng the XJ put a 350 sbc in it and get hard top and hard doors. If i were to put a 350 in, would i have to replace the jeep tranny with a chevy tranny or do they make adapters ?

the transmission that is in there now (if stock) is the least desirable of all jeep transmissions. you would have to change it in order to run the 350

Kinda 50/50 shot between the puegeot and ax-15, depends on the month it was made. Reguardless, I wouldn't want either behind a smallblock.

If it's just going to be a street driven Jeep then that'd work, the ratio's in those aren't all that good for low range use.

If it's a big wheeling Jeep you are looking to build then source an NV4500 or stick to a 4 speed and go SM465 or SM420 and just don't gear the axles as low so it keeps the RPM's down if you need to drive it on the highway too.

Is the suspension on that thing stock ? It doesn't seem like my wrangler will articulate like that.

IIRC thats a 4" Superlift. Used to work quite nicely. Had enough articulation to get me through Aftershocks one year (though not enough clearance, that why the rocker panels look the way they do! )
