Old Picture match up
Have this picture I've been trying to locate the place it was taken. The picture is of Ralph Stineman and he was an early turn of the century photographer. Most of his desert pictures was of Devils Canyon. This picture has taken me nearly 2 years to locate where it was taken at.
Heres Ralph airing down to run Devils. Notice his beadlocks on the rear of his Ford Bush Runabout? Here Iam same place airing down also. Heres an overlay...I think I'll join these ghosts for this run.. |

That is extraordinary. You can see how the bushes have grown; the one on the left side, in the middle, shows especially well.

I'm not sure who that rookie is that required all the extra horspower... but I believe that is Devils Canyon off the 8 (during the brief time it was open).

I can't put my finger on why, but this stuff simply fascinates me. Awesome work!
Maybe it's because I enjoy history and offroading and this is kind of a mix of the two. |

Its fun stuff to do. Yesterday (1.4.08) Geared For Fun rep Steve Unwin ( pictures in one of the matchups) Walked the canyon with the BLM Archaeologist and a Seasonal Ranger for the canyon . Geared For Fun put in a permit about a year ago to run the canyon. Reopening the canyon is in progress. BLM is really hung up on insurance...a lot of insurance to run the canyon.

What do you mean by "hung up on insurance" and "a lot of insurance to run the canyon"?

Its one of the requirements listed on the permit. I undertand that the SD4W permit was almost lost for the Superstion run. Seems like the Archealogy study was required to be done at a large expence. The county of Imperial fronted the money for the study. Im also sure they required a permit and some insurance to do this run.
Same as Devils. Only for now Devils is a closed canyon. Theres a lot of pressure to open the canyon and the canyon has enough documentation as a road to be opened. The insurance on the permit was for 1mil. I'm not sure what kind of policy would have been required. At least the BLM is showing effort to open. |

Judging from the old pic, had Matt kept his leafs and slapped on some cool wooden spokes and pizza cutters, he would have made it no problem
That is amazing to see these pics and what they did back then. Thanks for sharing Vern. |

Stage Coach Schedule
Ever wonder about the cost of moving around during the 1870's out of San Diego?? Found this. Arizona City is Yuma...
John G Capron lost the stage line shortly after. The stages were 4 horse drawn carraiges. I have a advertisment of the sale of his coaches very cheap. But heres the schedule..Just think... |
