Trail Rack or Expedition Rack
Opinions needed here. I am considering some sort of rack for gear for the YJ. The last few fishing trips with my boys made for some very close quarters.
Anyone with experience, or know of others, with Garvin's 'Trail Rack' or the 'Expedition Rack'? Other than the $350 price difference and that the Trail Rack can hold up to 250 lbs versus 300 for the larger rack, I'm riding the fence on either one. I've seen what can happen to tailgate racks which leads me toward the roof one. But, I'm sure the top Racks get in the way sometimes. Is Steel Horse the only other that makes racks or are there others to consider? Thanks in advance for your suggestions. Jason |

Kargomaster makes one of the best racks out there.

I have the Garvin Swing Away Carrier/Trail Rack and the Expedition Rack. I like both of them. I have since hung the Expedition Rack from the rafters in my shop. I do not ike having all of that weight up high.
The Congo Cage looks very nice and I like the ability to easily remove the "basket." If I were to do it again I might get the Congo Cage. Keep in mind that the trail rack does not hold all that much. I regularly stow a large ice chest and a small BBQ when I load it up. HTH!

have you considered a small trailer on 33s or 35s? I've towed a friends on the trail and I wouldn't dare take it on the hammers, but If I had a winch to winch it out of a bad spot I wouldn't worry too much about taking it on the rubicon.
but the problem with a trailer is you end up being able to haul way too much stuff and your friends will fill it up in a hurry with thier big coolerchests full of beer as far as racks on the spare tire -- too much weight too far back and the rig wheels goofy on the roof -- too much weight up too high and I'd be worried about being too tippy. another options is to trim the gear down to backpacking limits, but this takes away the creature comforts like chairs and big coolers, gas BBQs, tables etc. . - Dan ( who will likely be building a small trailer in the next year or so )
