winches

So is there something wrong with the Mile Marker 8000 winch? It is priced much lower than others but from their lit. seems to be a great deal @ $400. Must be a catch, right? I'd appreciate some input on this.

My negative feeling about that winch comes from the fact it's not really made by Milemarker. It's imported from China and Milemarker sticks their name on it.

Jerry, that probably explains the low price. But is the winch any good?

Doubtful.

It's likely a permenant magnet motor instead of series wound.

My .02 after owning one. They are slow but will likely do the job for light use. Permanent magnet motor, plastic free spool lever, bushings not bearings on motor, cheap.
The TMAX would be a better choice for a cheap winch. Metal free spool lever, bearings on motor, series wound motor, more HP, almost the same price if you shop around.
Both made in China.
I currently own both a TMAX 9000, and a Warn xdi 9000. I figure they are almost a draw for performance, but the TMAX is a pretty decent winch for under $500.

I would 2nd the info on the t-max

I have the TMEW9500, and although I dont do what some of you guys would call hardcore, I think the overall quality speed and features of the winch make it the obvious choice in the sub $500 range.

Be sure also to check out Warn's fairly new line of lower cost Tabor winches. Manufactured in the U.S. in Warn's Oregon manufacturing facility, they are darned near the same overall quality and feature level of the standard Warns. The main reason they cost less is they come with a one year warranty vs. Warn's usual lifetime warranty.

Check out the two Tabor winches at http://www.warn.com/truck/winches/value_series.shtml
