Depends on how far south you want to go.

I have used The Diamond Source in Old Town, San Diego and have been very happy with their work.

A man brought a large very expensive diamond to a jeweler for cutting. Old jeweler examined the stone carefully with a magnifying glass and said, "This is a very expensive stone, it costs at least $750 thousand dollars, and proper cutting can alter its value significantly." The man asked, "Can you cut it?" The jeweler replied, "Sure we can," and?threw the diamond to a 14-year-old boy by the grinding wheel, "Here, Moisha, cut this stone when you are done with the one you are working on."

The man became very nervous and inquired the jeweler as to what he was doing. The jeweler said, "Don't you worry about a thing, sir; you know that stone is $750 thousand, I know that stone is $750 thousand, Moisha doesn't know that, he'll cut it just fine."

I wasn't going to suggest a San Diego jeweler I have used for years due to the distance involved but since others did, so will I. Leo Hamel has done outstanding work for me at around half the cost of the usual retail cost. For one example, I found a diamond necklace for my wife at a local jewelry store that was around $4200. I talked the store into laying it on the Xerox copier and taking a pic of it, lying that I wanted to show it to my wife. Based on that Xerox copy, Leo Hamel's jeweler perfectly copied that design for me and I got it for $2100, 50% off. Ten years later, she is still wearing it and it's problem-free.

If you call their San Diego store and talk with Lisa Hamel, she would likely give you a sweeter-than-usual price if you mention I sent you. http://www.leohamel.com/

Thanx for the replies. I wasn't thinking that far south but if they are any good, I won't mind the drive. I need some custom (intricate) band work done in white gold. Does that change any of the above recommended folks?

Robert,

I'm not sure of bands per se, but a guy I used to play hockey with is a diamond broker/jeweler who also specializes in custom work. I met him after getting my wife's rings, but another guy on my hockey team used him and got totally hooked up with a nice custom ring set at a good price.

You can see some of his work on his website http://www.gotdiamonds.net and he is located downtown in the diamond district.

His name is Shimi (pronounced "Shimmy") and he's a good guy.

Good luck!

Q: How is the USS Enterprise like toilet paper?

A: They both circle around Uranus looking for Klingons to wipeout!
