Lubing driveshaft splines

I was doing my normal maintenance on my rear driveshaft last night when it occured to me I never lube the splines. Both my rear and front driveshafts have a rubber boot to protect the spines, but I wonder if it would be a good idea to lube them? I have been hearing a noise lately that seems to coincide with the suspension moving up and down, and I think it might be the splines in my front driveshaft. Should I cut off the metal bands holding the boot on and zip tie it back on when I am done?

I lost the boot long ago from the front DS. I grease mine every time I change the oil. The rear has a grease fitting.

Loose the boot once the straps are off the boots dont seem to last unless you put metal straps back on it.

you can mark the shaft so it goes back the same and put a med.bead of grase around the top of the female splines if you put to much the shaft wont slide all the way and may not expand verry easy.
