You've never played the "how many dehydrated peache packages can you fit in your mouth" game then, have you? That, and some water makes for goooood entertainment.

The one I ate did not have any dehydrated fruits. I consumed beef with mushrooms in sauce, a little bit of white rice that was crunchy. Heated them in the heat pack that filed the room with carbide smell. The cutest thing in the bag was a little bottle of tobasco sauce ? justly like real one but tiny. Judging by the color of the tobasco sauce inside the bottle, the particular bag of MRE must have been around since the Carter administration.
I actually liked it. But at $6 a pop they are not worth it to eat everyday. I can buy a regular lunch for $6 or even less... |

As you already know Sergey, I think they are the handiest thing invented since disc brakes. I always keep a couple in my rig and I now have about 5 cases (12 per case) stored in my garage.
Funny story.........when my boys were about 4 years old, my wife cleaned out under thier beds one day and found a BUNCH of candy wrappers.......when asked where they got it they said "Daddy had it", when I got home she asked me where I had all the candy stashed.........You guessed it, they had found my MRE's and tore open 3 CASES to get out the candy and chewing gum..... Perfect JEEP food! Brad |

Can one of you Navy guys answer one question for me? Just what is a 'MRE'? Obviously it is food of some sort. However, what's the acronym stand for? Meals *something* *something*???? I dunno.

Well, I did 8 in the Navy so I guess I qualify.
Meals Ready to Eat Concerining the comment about ripping open the MREs to get the candy.....we use to open up the life raft survival kits (on board ship) to get the cigarettes (back when I had that habit). Before someone freeks.....it was OK to do so....we were replacing them with new(er) survival kits....no use tossing out good smokes! (albeit, they were a little dated) |

Meals Rejected by Ethiopian's.
Nope William, never did the dehydrated fruit trick. I do remember a piece of that stuff sucking up every bit of moisture in my mouth though! Course, I keep one pack in each Jeep "just in case" |

If you guys are into the eclectic food, etc. There is a company called tasty bites that makes lentil soups, egplant curry, Jumpar potatoes, etc that are good unfridged for 1 year. You can put them on your tranny tunnel and heat them up too. Plastic spoon and you're in buisness. They even have a few meat meals too.
Yummy stuff.

And Stu,
You're really "Old Navy" if you remember life raft rations with cigarettes in them!!! Of course, did you ever take the sea dye packettes and shove them in a marine strainer??? Makes for some good wholesome fun!!!

My first experiance with MRE's was when Mt Pinatubo (in the Philippines), erupted. I lived there then. We had ZERO water, electricity or any other utility for ~a month on base. I've eaten 100's of them (or at least rumaged through them for what I wanted). LOL
The Chicken Chop-Suey wasn't bad (at the time). Those were the days.....MRE's washed down with warm San Miguel beers! |

When I was in Egypt for two months (Operation Bright Star...Oct-Dec 88) we ate MRE's for breakfast and lunch everyday. We had K-rations for the dinner meal, prepared by Egyptian locals. For Thanksgiving, we were given an extra chicken breast, and pudding. Anyway, you learn to appreciate your own creativity when you have 120 meals to eat that come out of sealed plastic bags.
At any rate, remember that the people kicking ass for us right now are most likely eating those same MRE's. |

Hmmm, maybe I'm weird but I actually like them. Granted I never had to eat them , but I do carry them with me on camping trips and wheeling adventures. You do have to admit that the Peanut butter is good and those brownie thingies are pretty tasty

MREs are gourmet foods compared to the stuff us older geezer-type guys got to eat back in the late sixties. Mmmm... I still remember the chopped eggs and ham, crackers, jelly, and kool-aid I lived on for a few weeks at a particularly lovely remote assignment in a real noisy-interesting environment. Once in a while we even got some extra-tasty stuff I think we called LRRPS... which made us feel like we were dining at the Ritz.

Your first??
I've eaten more than I care to think about. Meals with a 10 year shelf life, made by the lowest bidder. Yum.
