In my situation, I need and rely on a hook on the cable end since there are so many hook-tow purchase arrangements out there on so many vehicles.
In the photos above, does that loop link fit pretty much all hook and tow arrangements as a female hook, or just specific applications? Intriguing set up. Thanks in advance.

Also, there are very few places a hook will work that a shackle won't and shackles rarely if ever come undone when a bounce or surge in the recovered rig induces a little slack in the rigging.

The other nice thing is that you can hold the thimble by the loop and never suck your hand into the winch.

Two other nice things - it won't fit into a failead so your hand can't get sucked in if you are holding it, and it is very small compared to the huge hooks that were coming on our ropes.

Also in industrial ratings, you have to reduce your WLL for each connection made in the rigging.

I wound up with some "Chicago" 6.5 ton 7/8" shackles. Heres where I really got confused... I then asked for a hook for the same rating, it was GIGANTIC. I showed them the small hook that came with my Warn cable and they said that it "might" be a 1.5 ton hook (unmarked). The reason it doesnt break is that it is being used within the 4X safety factor realm (4*1.5 ton = 12,000lb). So, heres my question... what is an appropriate "safety factor" for the type of winching that we do? It seems that Warn thinks a safety factor of "0" is acceptable. What is the "Safety Thimbel" rated at? Last question What knot is that on Chris L's rope? Looks like a noose slip knot. Is that used because that type of rope cant be woven back together (unlike an Amsteel)? |

Thus: 10,000 lb winch capacity, x 2=20,000 20,000 x 1.5=30,000 A 15+ ton capacity should do it then. I use industrial hooks with swaged and looped-sleeve ends at about 40 ton rating each. Resulting in a hook about 6" across at the hook shank. I always toss my factory OEM hooks on the winch as shipped, then cut the line and have it swaged and metal sleeve looped.
