New Weld Truck

From time to time we leave the shop to do on site weld work.

Previously we've been using a really, really, really run down tandem axle trailer with a Miller Bobcat something or other welder. Truth be told, it's marginally more powerful than a Millermatic 251.

We needed a new platform to start from scratch, and the boss was thinking a brand new 3/4 to 1 ton pickup with a utility body on the back.

If you ask me, utility bodies are difficult to develop into a workable platform for a mobile weld vehicle without throwing tons of cash at them in order to make everything accessable.

I wanted to keep it simple, and put the money where it counts, into the equipment, and not the truck.

So I talked the boss into getting a DRMO'd HMMWV.

What we actually acquired was a HMMWV equipped with a LOSAT (Line Of Sight Anti Tank) system that was no longer in use.

It arrived yesterday.

We're going to strip it back down to it's original pickup configuration and stuff a Miller Big 40 Deluxe , IR compressor, and a few other goodies on the back.

I only got to work on it for about 45 minutes yesterday, but managed to remove the launch tubes from both sides. We got a lot of attention driving around yesterday.

Anti tank missles were not included.

That'll be pretty cool when you are done with it.

There's a fire station near me that has a firefighting HUMVEE that looks pretty neat.

I guess you'll end up with the welding version.

Excellent.

By the way, can I interest you in some anti-tank missiles?

Considering you can easily blow 100k on a truck and still not do it right, I didn't want to even attempt it and end up with something half assed.

I only had an initial budget of 40k, and that was for the truck equipment, and anything I wanted for the weld shop. Considering I saved the boss an easy 30-40k on a new truck, he let me spend some of that on equipment.

I think I made out well, and I can't wait to finish the Humvee. Problem is, right now we're so busy, it's gonna hafta sit until things slow down.

Don't get used to it.

Fresh Camo when it's done.
