Johnson Valley "rookie" run April 5-6
I am putting together a run to Johnson Valley that is specifically geared towards getting "rookies" out to run the Hammers for the first time.
Rookies and Veterans are invited. Like I said, the emphasis is on getting new guys out and to have plenty of help available to get them through their "first time". Veteran JV drivers know what is required. Packing a little extra patience couldn't hurt. Rookies will need a suitably prepped vehicle running 33"+ tires, hard lockers front and rear, and MUST have front and rear tow points. Saturday will probably be Sledge, Sun is up in the air and will be chosen by participants "majority rules" style Sat night. Leave the lakebed at 8:00 AM on Sat for the trail. |

This sounds exactly like what I need... now to figure out how to wheel two weekends in a row and not have my wife lock me out. Just committed to doing Doran Canyon again the weekend just before April 5-6. I know which run I WANT to do... hmmm...

Jerry,
Bag Doran and head to JV. My first time was last year's "rookie run". Lesser equipped Jeeps than yours made it through with no problems. It is definitely a low-stress, friendly enviornment, ideal for a first timer. If my back feels up to it, I'd like to go as well. We'll see.

Jerry,
just take your time, listen to your spotter and relax. Sledge is pretty cool. I spotted a guy in a spring under YJ on 33's over it last year on the rookie run and he made it fine. He did however learn after the first 2 obstacles that he was much better off listening to me than ignoring me and trying to drive his way through it without a clue |

I'm looking for a JV trip, but probably the early week of May.
I have friends coming in from out of town that weekend in April. Anyone want to recommend a first trail?

Aside from us JV rookies, how many others do you think will be on this run utahjeepr? Is this a definite run date even if we don't get more rookies saying they'll be there?

What am I running? D44, D30, Detroit in the rear, No-Slip in the front, Currie's Anti-Rock, heimed rear swaybar, 35" MT/Rs, 4.88 gears, 5.5" lift, Skyjacker tie-rod, RE Trackbar, nothing all that unusual... and still running the stock draglink which has me more than a little nervous. Maybe I'll swap that out ahead of time if I get a chance. Where are you living now so you're just "coasting down the hill"? No longer in Lakewood? |

Jerry,
If you're gonna' swap out to the Currie draglink, now would be a good time. If not, don't let it stop you from going. I'm gonna' pick up a Currie link to go along with my heavy tierod w/big ends. I usually have spare u-joints, fluids, fan belt, radiator hose, heater hose, stock draglink, etc. Basically, I bring the same stuff I do anywhere. If you have spare front shafts it wouldn't be a bad idea, but not the end of the world without 'em. Last time on Sledge, an early Bronco blew up his front end right before the mailbox. With his two wheel drive and the help of a strap, he got out. My advice is to try to keep things as light as possible. Only bring the stuff you need and leave the rest at camp. As long as you're cautious and aren't too proud for a few stacked rocks or the strap now and again, you'll be fine. You may distort some sheet metal along the way, but ... At 63, my dad took his rig out there for the first time and did fine. It just took him a bit to adjust to driving the big, tight, endless rocks (as opposed to Rubicon) and to learn to work with a spotter. Have fun and make sure you have somebody to take pictures.

Thanks guys. I'll be stripping the Jeep down at camp to lighten it up before we head out. The spare tire, ORF tire carrier, jerry cans, all that kind of stuff (except for my IOU pad) will be left in camp.
The major good news for me is a kindly annonymous member (come on, everyone knows who you are ) of this forum is hooking me up with a Currie HD steering kit at a great price so that's one less thing to worry about. I'm really looking forward to doing JV at last, and I'm really glad for the extra help like the great spotting that'll help us rookies make it through. I think it's going to be a kick in the a$$. Spare shorts will be packed and ready. |

question...
I really want to check out this run... unfortunately my Jeep is open in front and my driving skills are not yet up to this level. Will anyone have an open seat or two, (I actually met a female Jeeper that would like to go as well!), let me know if you've got any extra room.
Brian.

If there is no open seats you can drive to the trailhead and walk the trail. It is only about a mile or so. You can walk faster than they drive.......except for maybe Garry or Blaine Sledgehammer is a loop so you will come back to your parked Jeep at the end of the trail.

Thanks Scott. Looks like I'll be there with my walking shoes on. Any comments like "oh, come on, you can make it..." will be disregarded.

I need directions to where we'll be camped. I've only been to Johnson Valley twice as a spectator to watch the ARCA/RCAA events and don't really know my way around the area that well.
Anyone care to try and give me the kind of directions to where the group will be camped that even a blind man could follow? |

Jerry,
247 to Boone Road Boone Road dead ends - go LEFT As you're driving, look to your left, you should see us there. If you get the wash, you've gone too far. Scott

I am not sure. I discovered that my rear axle has started leaking again three days ago. I tightened the bolts, and I need to see if it is still leaking or what. Also I am not sure what is the dealeo with my transfer case shifter?
Are you going? |
