I think the game plan, from our end, will be to leave Phoenix about mid day Monday and head out to Yucca Valley. We'll stay the night in a local motel (I found a couple that allows small pets).

On Tuesday AM, we'll catch Blaine and Kathryn coming through town (you do come through there, right?). We'll follow them to the lake bed and proceed to make my TJ worthy of the JV trails We should be able to get a trail in on Tuesday before it gets dark, according to Blaine. After that, if my junk is still running, we'll play with Blaine and kathryn on the trails until we get thrown out of camp on account of needing a shower (or some other reason).

Robert....I hope you can show up before we have to head for home and a HOT shower!

William, are you coming out?

Stu, I would like to come out earlier but I have work committments (dang, thats what I get for getting my way on a pay dispute - more work) so at the least, it will be Weds. night after work before I could hit the lake bed.

I'd like to be able to say I'll see you guys out there, but I'll be in Tucson. I guess grandparents really get upset if you don't bring their grandchildren around for them to see on holidays. At least that's what I've been told.

I Hope everyone has fun and I'll try to catch you guys the next time out.

OK folks.....my wife is asking me questions for which I do not know the answers (I know, so what else is new?).

We are doing Thanksgiving the Saturday before (Nov. 23rd) and Donna said she can cook an extra big turkey. The extra turkey would obviously accompany us to JV and be shared.

The question is (this is a two part question):

1. Is this acceptable by those that will be coming?
2. How many are quite sure they will be coming (necessary info to determine proper size of extra large turkey).

Blaine and Kathryn......are you guys still planning on hitting JV on Tuesday AM? If so, will you be coming through Yucca Valley?

I'll be there. And I think; I'll take my brother with me. Sharing turkey with two of us is acceptable.

Well I need to call Blaine back and if I can get my rig in a manner of repair I will be there. I already told family I wont be at any of the parties that weekend.

Now to convince my wife and daughter, it is my daughters on the 28th and she keeps saying some BS about being with friendson Friday.

I am trying to get a motor home and trailer to make it a little nicer for the family if not it may be just me a tent and a big smile.

We will bow out on the turkey due to Kat dietary requirements. We will plan on picking you up in Yucca Valley and leading you out to the lakebed.

I plan on going out to the Lake bed on Monday late afternoon. I'll be bringing the fifth wheel. Any one that wants a quick shower is welcome to use mine. I have an inside and outside shower. I will bring some 5 gallon water jugs to replenish the 55 gallon tank. The only thing I would ask is for any one going to town to maybe fill up a jug or two?
Also if any one has some good wheelin' tapes, they would be welcome to play them in the trailer. I could set the TV up outside the trailer if that would be better.
I also will have a generator, so if you feel the need for any power tools bring them along.

Stu, I like turkey. I have no idea if my son will be joining me but I do know my wife won't.
Looking forward to JV!

Ron

I will be there late Weds afternoon or early evening. Sorry to show up late but I need the hours at work.

Anyways, Garry and I spoke yesterday and thought that rather than serving cold turkey, we could deep fry one after we get done wheeling on Thursday. Typically it only takes an hour or so and contrary to what you would think, its not greasy. If you have the oil hot enough, it seals the fatty skin of the turkey and actually delivers a very moist bird to the table.

Garry said he would pick up a propane fired deep fryer and I volunteered to bring the turkey. We thought this would work out well given that I am not showing up until Weds evening so having to deal with refrigerating a bird for 2-3 days wouldn't be a problem for you folks out on the lakebed.

Blaine.....sounds good to me. I'll firm up details when they become available.

Robert....OK, you talked me in to a deep fried turkey. (never had it but it sounds good to me!)

Ron.....we too will bring a couple extra 5 gallon water containers (with H2O) to contribute to the cause. I was working through various scenarios for a mid-trip shower.....yours sounds MUCH better than some of the ideas I had! LOL

Oh....I almost forgot to ask....Donna was wondering if anyone was brining a Dutch Oven?

Unless you need them in transit. We can fill them in Yucca Valley. Good last minute place to get ice also.

We do not own one. I guess that's a no. btw- how much salt does it take to brine a Dutch Oven? Do you use iodized or just normal table salt? Or, is it something more exotic like rock salt for water softener systems? After you get done brining it, then what? Does it make it cook better or is this some AZ bizarre way of seasoning cast iron? Enquiring minds want to know.

I am not familiar with the ways of "Dutch Ovening"......but I can check with Donna and see if she is. (In this case, I am just a simple conveyor of other people's questions and answers.)

A "new" dutch oven does need to be "seasoned" but I never heard of using brine to do it

I will also be bringing 10 gal's of water - pretty standard when I pack the truck to pack my 2 j-cans.

Yes, brining a Dutch oven is the smart thing to do. They're known for their windmills, their tulips and puting poisinous stuff in their ovens.

Donna told me this morning to drop a note here and mention that we will be handling the mashed potatoes and gravy (to go along with the turkey).

(I am sitting here, thinking about this....and getting hungry!)

Okay-I need a small favor from anyone attending the Thanksgiving Day feast at JV. I want to remember the time I was at Dumont Dunes over Tday weekend. So-will you take a piece of turkey-throw it on the ground-eat it-and tell me how wonderful it was?
Actually, my event was wonderful. I just can't forget that anytime we cooked, it seemed like the wind was blowing sand/gunk onto the food. And it all tasted great after a full day of wheeling! Sorry I won't be there.

Blaine,

In preparation for the trip, I pulled the hard doors today and made sure there was no problem removing them. That is taken care of.

Saturday, I will pull the storage box out of the back.

Looking forward to the trails!

I'm just following Blaine's suggestion.

Did I mention that I was amazed at how much the full metal doors weigh?
