Cool

You and Blaine? The two perpetual rookies...

Well, I'll see what I can do. Are you bringing the motor home, and if yes, can I sleep in it?

Not this time - I'm just coming out for Saturday. My back is so wrecked that sleeping even in the motorhome is not an option for me. If I were to bring it you could of course sleep in it. Assuming the gas you produce after eating potted meat is odorless....

Jeff:
I believe it's actually called potted meat by products. I agree with your concern about the gas that may be produced. I however think you should be more concerned about finding your favorite ten-year old socks and sneakers all soggy in the morning from being licked and chewed on overnight.

I don't lick nor chew children socks or snickers. Not my kind of thing.

Well, the axle has stopped leaking. Which could be that my bolt tightening action helped, or it is simply out of oil.

Where do they sell Torco diff fluid in San Diego, by the way? I just discovered that I am out of Torco.

I am not sure about the transfer case linkage. I don't want to play with it, as if it locks into 4 wheel low again, I won't have transportation to work.

I have some Sergey, diff oil that is. I don't think your linkage is an issue. If it does pop off again, just get under there and move the lever on the t-case back in to 2-hi and don't worry about it. It's easy to figure out, one direction all the way is 4 lo and the other direction all the way is 2 hi.

I unscrewed the fill plug and checked. The axle was low on oil (how low ? hard to tell), but not completely dry, as I saw some shining on the gears.

I found that I still had some quart and a half of oil hidden in various places around the house, and I added some, but after adding about half a quart my oil-pumping device broke. I got to get one of those filling tubes.

I just checked Victorville's weather and it's gonna be cold out there at night and early morning. The low is supposed to be 32 degrees Saturday and 38 degrees Sunday, with a high of 60 and 68 Saturday and Sunday respectively. I'm bringing my warm jammies!

Jerry,
that is summertime weather compared to weekend we had out there last February - it was 6 degrees at dawn - folks were out of the tents and had a campfire going pretty early that morning

Yowsa, that's pretty danged cold. I'd never survive in a cold area again (lived in North Dakota while in the USAF)... I'm a warm-weather wheeler now. Though it won't be as cold this weekend as it was for you guys back in February, I'm still bringing my arctic gear with me.

Gotta ask if someone will have a grill I can throw some meat on Saturday night. It's gonna be a little tight in the TJ so I'd have to get creative to get a grill in there too. TIA!

Had a great time on Saturday, a learning experience to say the least. Here are a few pics I took:

JV 3.5.3

Thanks all,

Looks like it was pretty cold out there based on the attire. Lot's of pics with no drivers, remote control? Did Jerry have some sort of breakage? I see one pic with the wheel turned and some winches hooked up down there.

Cool

Yep, that was fun. Jerry broke the U-joint, and the ears were gone off course. Then we found out that the only spare stub we had turned out to be for a 260 U-joint, so Jerry drove the rest of the trail in 3-wheel drive. The winch was used to help powering the disabled side through the rough sections of the trail.

The busted front u-joint and axleshaft was minor compared to the absolute blast I had running Sledgehammer... even if much of it was on my winch. To say that I'm pumped about doing Johnson Valley again but better prepared the next time would be putting it mildly. Either a front Warn kit or heat-treated front axles from Superior will hopefully be my next birthday present.

A BIG thanks to everyone who was so patient and helpful to me, I really appreciated that plus the great spotting very much. A special thanks to Blaine and Paradiddle Jeff, I couldn't have done it as well without you.

Wow, what a trail... a real eyeopener to say the least.

Is there any chance of getting a high res. copy of the picture of my Jeep. Sway away would be thrilled to get a picture of some flex, their shock and the RaceRunner sticker.

I had a great time as usual - tough trail, great friends, and the wind!!!

Did I say it was windy.

Thanks Blaine for the chance to drive a little and the seat - you Jeep constantly amazes me.

Jerry - very nice to meet you and no prob on the help - I did sleep like a rock that night! Brian and Sarah (I hope I didn't blow your name - bakin in the sun!) - nice to meet you as well). Tom and Lisa, Jeff, Joe, Joe and the rest of the On The Rocks crew - nice to see you guys again.

Sergey - your "Bag of Mystery Meat" was outstanding as usual.

Can't wait until the next time!

Jeff

You've known Sergey longer than me - you know what his typical diet is on Jeeping trips.

We are sitting at lunch - already laughing about all the processed meat products in his green dufflebag when he looks up and says:

"Vons had some new items...."

Blaine and I laughed so hard.....

God Bless Potted Meat!!!!

Jeff

Too bad I can't get a picture linked - the one of him holding the cracker upside down is classic!

Taste team comments on Potted Meat:

Russ: ?I didn?t know you had a Bass-O-Matic?

Patti: ?Holy Mother of God, what am I eating??

Aaron: ?Please tell me that was the dog food.?

John: ?I want to meet the person who thought that was edible?and give him the beating of his life.?

Excellent....

Those people are amateurs. You are not supposed to eat potted meat on a cracker. You just bend the cap and use it to scoop out the product and place it right in your mouth.
