Wheeling in Johnson Valley

I will be heading out West in April to wheel in different areas. I would truly enjoy making my first stop and wheel with some of the best company I've met in Johnson Valley.

I've touched on this subject with Mr. B which advised that there should be no problem coming down with advance notice on the dates. I would tremendously enjoy seeing and wheeling with as many of you as can possibly come during these days.

I was thinking of arriving on the 12 of April and wheel from the 13 (Sat) through16 (Tues) or the 17th of April. I will be towing from afar and would like to know if this is acceptable to all of you. I am in search for a tremendous amount of fun and who better than some of you whom I already know. I will bring my thick skin.

Seth,
Sorry to hear this.

Hardly no responses so I guess these days will not work for many. Oh well, maybe next year unless someone has alternate dates that might work.

Jim, do I detect a tiny little bit of snivelling there?

I was just ignoring you. I will be available with all the interested parties I am able to muster. I wouldn't worry too much, just show up and we will go wheeling. No problem. All we have to do is see if you can stay up with Garry, he has little respect for big tires as you yourself witnessed at the last event.

You are just another ride in the amusement park of my mind.

Jim B,

I think that you threw in the towel a bit early. You only gave this post one day. I'd give it a least a week.

It sounds pretty good....and I am tempted....but it is so close to Moab (same month and all that). If I break at JV, I have two problems (a long way from home and will it be ready for Moab). I don't have those deep pockets (and a tow rig) like JimB does! I have to drive what I use on the trail.

Looking forward to meeting you again on Sat. 4/13 - 16.

Hey cabana boy:
Whining doesn't become you, however the grey truck, trailer and driver will get ya home before you turn into a pumpkin if things don't work out.

I knew my snivelling would you get some of you to come around. You guys/gals are too soft. Btw, I like the softness around here.

Scott, Gary, Kat, heck even Blaine, look forward to seeing you all. I hope it's not too dusty Let's mark those calendars!

Blaine,
I'm sure you and Gary will show me the way. I come to learn your terrain, to be lead, to be fun. Big tires.. I guess Gary does not have any respect for you either

Stu,
Have you been inside my pockets looking around?

Gary already gave you a way out. What's a few scratches anyway. Damage is only in the eyes of the beholder.

Jim, as you're coming in the middle of the week, I doubt I can get vacation. That's my busy time of the year.
See you in Moab!
Ron

I like the way my Jeep is now..... I'd just like it, well, a little higher off the ground with more ground clearance!

Just took a look at the calendar. I am suppose to be in Moab 6 days after JV.

I remember Robert doing JV multiple weeks before Thanksgiving. Result = he never made it to AZ for our fall wheelin' trip on account of the wounds he incurred.

Seriously, is JV wise to do 6 days before a 1 week vacation in Moab?

It is never wise to do JV and expect to come through unscathed. The rock gods are finicky and sometimes require more sacrifices than at other times to keep them appeased.

If you're looking for a JV virgin to sacrifice, I respectfully submit my application. Although I'm not running Warn front axles, I do now have a vehicle capable of towing (5.4L Expedition, also the new family truckster ) and would rent a trailer just in case. With that and a Readywelder, hopefully all would be well.

Stu,

I can appreciate your concerns as I am in the same predicament. Just take it slow and we use the line when necessary, no reason to take unnecessary chances. The main thing is to have a lot of fun.

How were you planning to get the Ford up into Wrecking Ball to retrieve your rig?

Jeff, you are always welcome. We plan on starting on some of the easier stuff to get Jim's rock skills up to par and then tackle some of the harder stuff. Bear in mind that the difficulty level is similar to the Richter scale. The range of toughness is somewhere between 7.2-7.4. I think each point on the Richter, say like .2 increasing to a .3 is a factor of 10.

JV is the same way. Aftershock is very easy, but still a 4+ trail due to a nasty obstacle near the top.

Garry and I with a group, did Aftershock and Clawhammer in the same day. Next time around, Hellbender, Robert, Bruce, Sergey, and some more of us had to rescue the trail leader and nearly missed dinner.

You are just another ride in the amusement park of my mind.

Paradiddle, Chris L.- I am going to suggest that as the time gets closer, we who are going, put up the number of empty seats available. You all are very welcome to ride with me any time my right seat is empty.

I would also highly suggest that anyone with a back seat that is considering going, please remove it and therefore the temptation to carry more than one full size passenger. I have seen people do it on a lot of trail runs, but the jeep really struggles with the extra weight out there.

You are just another ride in the amusement park of my mind.

He he he - that is probably the best way to describe what will happen to you. You think you have wheeled hard stuff and you are going along just fine lets say on Aftershock, and then you come around a corner and you are staring at a rockpile about 30' high and the line is only an inch either way - its like getting slapped real hard across the cheek

I'm in for one of the days at least - my b-day is the 15th so the timing is pretty good.

(Open to picture of red TJ, 38" tires, laying on it's side on the escalator at Moab. Driver: Jim, passeneger, William).

Jim: William, hey, we laid it over guy..

William: (Thinking, there's no "we" to this, your wife's up there, and I"m not taking ANY blame). Uh yeah Jim, we're on the side alright..

Jim: Hey William, do you think I can back up?

William: Uh.. Jim, we're on our side, I don't know if..

(loud sound of screaching metal, grinding on rocks)

Jim: Hmmm. That doesn't seem to be working.

(cut later to jeep after bieng winched up by a smiling TJron and the fairy dust TJ)

Jim: (jumping out of jeep running to fender) William, pull up there, pull, pull! PULL!!

William: I'm pulling I'm pulling.

Dollie: Honey, did you mess up my jeep? Is there any damage?

Jim: See honey, no damage! No Damage!!!

William,

Most of it is true except you got it wrong when it came to the last line.

"See honey, "There is" no damage.

Again, this has worked for me for over 4 years so let's not wear it out in front of my boss.

Question for Jim B.

Do you think that you could arrange your schedule so the we do Moab first and then Johnson Valley? I want to go to Moab with my friends and if they do Johnson Valley first, they might break something and then Moab would be out of the question.

Please! Please! Please!

JimB,

JeepKat really has a pretty good idea, IMO. Can you flip-flop those two parts of your trip....do Moab first and then do JV?

I've yet to do JV and would love to, but as I said earlier, doing it 5~6 days before I head out to Moab....well, I can't risk that one. I don't have a trailer, etc., so if I don't drive it, it doesn't get to go.

Hmmmm.....for that matter, if you bust up in JV, you may not make Moab either.

I'll beg with Kat....please, please, please give it some thought, OK?

Does this mean you are going to Moab during the last week of April? Are you bringing the other half with you?

Ron,

The date is still TBD. But we want to go (the both of us) to Moab. I'm trying to arrange my vacation schedule and my co-worker has the week of 4-15 to 4-19 and only one of us can be on vacation at any given time, he is going on a cruse so he won't swap with me. If we do Moab first and then Johnson Valley then there won't be any conflict with our vacation schedules, hence my request to Jim to do Moab first and then Johnson Valley.

I think Jim has made some plans to wheel around Grand Junction, Colorado after Moab with a real good group of people but I don't know how solid his plans are.
We would sure like to see you guys in Moab if you make it!

I think I need more time off work, it looks like I'll be doing JV the same time as Jim but before JV, its terminator, predator, axle alley, and highway to heaven, then on to JV. then I'll load it on the trailer and drag it home on the 14 or 15th, then try and talk the wife into doing a weekend in moab where she will be driving, this is one of the bribes to get her to go and meet up with jim and everyone else, this is depending on if I have the money and if the thing still runs then.
