Los Coyotes

Based on the rumor mill, I thought this might be the last weekend to make a run to Los Coyotes, so I called Wanda at the main gate. She said no firm date exists to limit Los Coyotes to horses and hikers only. Seems some of the tribe members are avid off roaders and are still fighting the good fight. So far as I have read and heard starting several months ago, LCIR once again canceled their plans to close their trails to offroaders. Rumor is that we were bringing in too much money to their coffers for them to ban us.

Good to hear that they aren't closing down LCIR. Doesn't appear to me that it's a money issue though. The last 4 or 5 times i was there no one was at the gate in the morning to collect money and no one was there to collect exiting.

Don't get me wrong i think it was a fluke, more times then not they collect from my group. They are pretty cool about it too. We usually all show up at various times, but they give us the group discount regardless (think it's 6 vehicles).

They need to take some of that money they make and update the map though. It's unreadable and unaccurate.

A few months ago a friend brought his GPS up there and marked all the trails and even a few that weren't on the map. One of these days i'm hoping he'll update the map with something current. We even had plans to label all the trail heads as well, but we could never get an answer from LCIR if that was allowed or not so we put that project on the backburner.

I too have been there in the past when nobody was tending the newer gate.

I'm surprised they haven't adapted an honor system like the one at Sand Flats in Moab in which you fill out an envelope when the booth isn't being manned & place $ in a drop box. Then use the envelopes tear-off flap as a reciept.
