Lost a Best Friend

I know that most of you here are in Southern Califorina and seldom even see a hockey puck...but on the weekend a very good friend of mine passed away....he was a former NHL all star...Walt Poddubny....over the past few years Walt and I became very good friends....best friends....we would talk almost every day...always in the afternoon when things settled down with the kids and all....Walt had fallen a bit on hard times but his injuries from his playing days were taking a toll on him....he would have trouble getting in and out of my Jeep....Miss Sue would hand me the phone whenever Walt would call and say "it's for you...it's your boyfriend"....we would talk about everything....NHL hockey, my pickup hockey, sports etc.....every conversation would begin with him asking about my little ones and end with "say hi to Sue for me"...I am going to miss that big oaf...

Im a firm believer in that everything you say and do lead to some sort of a positive outcome. I dont have room in my life for negative people or thoughts.

Saw it on Hockey Night in Canada (finally available to us via NHL network on Directv). As a long suffering Kings fan (yes, I know that is redundant), I didn't get to see him much since he mostly played east. Sorry for your loss.

I'm sorry Ian, that's awful to read about. Heck I get choked up with people I barely know passing on, that's really tough when it's your best friend. My condolences.

Thanks for all the thoughts...it's been a tough week..beginning with the call I got from his sister last Saturday....I went right to their house and was surprised that the Police and Walt were still there...I was able to see him one last time...it was a big help having me there as I could liason between the Police and Family (being a former police officer I knew what the procedure would be but could soften it for the Family)....

On Wednesday we had the funeral and it was well attended....Walt was truly loved....after we went to his brother's house for a celebration of his life and watched his hockey highlites...he scored a lot of goals and took quite the punishment in front of the net (the area he always called his office)....though Walt had fallen on tough times we remained friends to the end...it's easy to be his buddy when he is living the NHL dream all Canadian kids dream of....I'll miss the big guy....thanks for listening...
