how do i get this thing out and other tips on removing 3 speed

i can't get the connector circled in red to pull out. is there a tool for this? any other tips on disconnecting cables and such?

Squeeze the two yellow tabs together and pull straight out.

ok, that's out of the way. i thought it would click when i squeezed the tabs, but i just had to pull on it.

any tricks to removing the shifter cables?

is the removal process pretty standard? as far as unbolting the flexplate from the TC before unbolting the tranny from the block?

Cables just pop off.

Removal is standard. You have it right.

Why is it coming out?

And DON'T forget to have 'em relocate the vent to the top of the housing.
