GPS is dead.

The internal battery in my GPS died. I've now lost all my Iceland, Moab, Los Coyotes, Big Bear, Anza Borrego, East Coast, and Bay area way points.

Sniff.

Anyway, can I change the internal battery my self, or will I have to mail it (the unit) in to be repaired?

I don't think you can replace the battery yourself without breaking something. Try calling their technical support: 1-800-800-1020

Like, that sucks, big time! Is that the way it's suppose to work? Are you sure all is lost? Maybe it will be there when you get a new battery? What brand is it?

William,

Unless yours is drastically different from most, you've lost your data.

Once you reprogram it (after you change the battery) you really want to back up your data. I do mine within my topographical software (TOPO!). I tend to leave a "Master" set of data on the PC (and back that up to CD), and only leave on the GPS the data that I use all the time. A lot of it is stored in "folders", so I can upload quickly. Who knows, I might actually NEED all the California NEXRAD site Lat/Longs again...

You can also use a program called Waypoint, it's shareware.

Either program beats the hell out of naming and editing waypoints using the GPS itself.

Eventually, I'll have a lot of coordinates on my website - been too busy looking for gainful employment lately to spend much time on it.

Jeff,
Where can I find a Garmin interface cable here in LA, seems all the stores that sell GPS's don't carry any of the stuff you need to use it as anything more than a compass. Also, is waypoint shareware and can I use that to download my waypoints onto a PC once I find the cable.

Well if that doesn't bite a dead donkey's weenie, I don't know what does.

It took me thousands of miles to collect the Iceland ones.. not that they are much good any more, but they were memories in a way. Cooler to say "I've been there" then "I down loaded these from the net".

@#$@#$@#. Guess I'll have to mail the @#$ thing in.

I can turn it on and it will re aquire all satalites after a while. But if the AA bateries die.. I loose them all again. Oh well.

Robert, the shareware program is actually called Waypoint+ (gotta get that little + on the end of it)

It can be found at http://www.tapr.org/~kh2z/Waypoint/ (a Tucson based ham radio group, no less)!

I keep a copy around so I can use it as a "common denominator" for other Jeepers who do not run the same mapping software that I do. It works good for that!

Robert - I got my Garmin cable from Wolfes
http://www.gpscables.com/

Real A1 gent to deal with, both the data and power cables were here before I even had time to cut him a check.

Stu's correct on the "+" with Waypoint +. Bear in mind that it can be a bit buggy at times.

Like Ace says, I got my cable from Frys Electronics. They are expensive for what they are if I remember correctly. You can either get a PC cable or a combo PC/cig. lighter adaptor cable.

I can't remember the price, but I remember I decided not to buy one thinking it was too expensive. I wouldn't use mine in conjunction with the PC enough.

Thanx Guys. I tried the REi by my house and a couple of the high end sporting goods places that carry them along with Best Buy and no deal on cables so I will give Frys or Wolfs a try when I get back form JV.

'Nother question for you GPS gurus though - I have a Garmin GPS12 and I have the Rubicon waypointed in the log - can a start new logs for the trails out JV or do I need to download the Rubicon stuff first in order to save it? I guess I could look at the directions but that stuff might as well be written in greek to me - I would rather get it in Jeeperspeak
Thanx.

I'm not familiar with Garmin products, but it seems you could. I know with my low-end Magellan I can store a whole bunch of "routes" without downloading them. I have a spur hiking trail near Deep Creek in there still to this day and haven't been there is probably close to a year, so I've got a bunch of other crap saved after it, although I'm not sure I could remember how to "recall" any of it. Last time I went hiking (a month or so ago) I was reviewing stored stuff and ran across Deep Creek.

Robert, it depends on how often you have the GPS-12 (I have the GPS 45 BTW) instructed to drop a cookie crumb. I generally download tracklogs after every trip.

It was set to once every 90 seconds on the Rubicon and for the most part, that worked out very well for me except when I forgot to turn it off at Gatekeeper to mess with my broken front end and then at Rubicon Springs to jump in the river and drink beer

Robert, did you find an interface cable?

If not, you can borrow mine.
