Is it the tires or the skill of the driver or both

Pro Comp tires finish 1st and 3ed in Calrocs Rockcrawling Championships.
If your skilled can you take any tire over rocks or are Pro Comp tires makeing a name for themselfs?

I read something a while back about them really stepping up on the 37" X-Terrains. Looking to go head to head with the Krawler or MTR as a rock tire.
Too bad they don't take the time to do something with the smaller versions

I really don't know a whole lot about tires, I just run what seems to work well for those that do the kind of offroading I enjoy. But even with my limited knowledge, it sure seems to me that ProComp XT tires have a pretty darned thin sidewall.

I was in a 4Wheel Drive store recently and when I compared the XT's sidewall with the other tires on display (BFG MT, SSR, etc.) and it just felt too thin for comfort. That the XT has a 2-ply sidewall isn't the end of the world, I realize, but is the XT's sidewall really up to abuse like the MT/R and Krawler sidewalls are? Maybe it is, I don't know... but I don't see how they could be.

I do know a few hard-core wheelers that run ProComp XT tires, IGOFSHN among them, and are very happy with them. I've just always had a gnawing question in the back of my mind whether they are truly as good as ProComp says they are.

According to PC's website, the 37" uses 3-ply sidewalls and a different rubber compound than the smaller tires. At about $400 per tire, I'd expect them to be different than the others to account for the steep price.

Hi Don P,

Are you considering changing tires from your MTR's to pro comps?

Sometimes a great driver can make up for crap equipment. Sometimes great equipment can make up for a crap driver.

Sometimes a crap driver with crap equipment can beat a great driver with great equipment, but that would require a crap day for a great driver with great equipment and a great day for a crap driver with crap equipment.

I have a set of the new 37" X Terrains waiting for a tryout as soon as I get the TJ finished. The tires have extremely beefy sidewalls and are quite heavy. They are much beefier than their smaller siblings.

You must be talking about the tires, because the wheels don't match the ones in the question.
