35s with minimal lift
just thinking out loud....
i currently have 2" BB and 1" BL, got my 35x13.50 Toyos and put them on, it looks kinda funny, but they fit pretty well. i can even wheel with them with some creative trimming and bumpstops. what are the major problems can i expect to run into going this route? i was thinking of a high-clearance hood for the front. i will be running a Tummy Tucker, so the breakover angle would still be pretty good. what about the rear? |

Dove tail
I been checking the rigs by all the teams from Farmington, New Mexico.
All of them made by Jim Peterson. He builds their custom J-arms suspension. All have custom J-arms with 2.5" coils or 4" coils. They have 35" or 37" tires. About 100" wheelbase. http://www.teamshej.com/ http://www.teampureadrenaline.com/ http://www.teamsisson4x4.com/ http://www.monsterslayer.com/jeep/TJ.../TJCrawler.htm http://jpmagazine.com/featuredvehicles/97058/ Low COG and big tires. They seem to do very well. Joel

Assuming you're doing Rubicon type trails, I can think of a few "problems". First, the stock spring rate may be a tad low if you have all the armor and rollcage and carry enough camping gear for a trail ride where you camp along the trail. Also, the stock arms work well but do not hold up long when subjected to a lot of bashing on rocks. Keep a few spare lowers on hand if you do. At that, I wouldn't call those problems major. Your chief issue will be longevity of the components.

TJ frame
Well maybe not OEM TJ's.
But the frames are TJ aftermarket frames, built the customer specs. It has the suspension mounting brackets as are in TJ's.

They have alot more than that. Nothing wrong with them but they are comp rigs, not trail rigs. My point is what is the plan for the TJ - I don't think cutting up his new Jeep is what he had in mind although he needs to answer that question.

There is a recent issue in jeep mag, that has a white TJ on 35's with no lift.

The idea is great but frankly, exposing all your underhood elements to the trail environment doesn't say much to me for durability, longevity and reliability. There has to be a better way and on top of that, I doubt any one of those comp rigs would come even remotely close to passing smog. |
