Guess what this is?
And, if you own one or have seen it previous, you are not allowed to play.

The pear shaped hole will let you slide an anchor shackle through and attach to a bumper tab with just a hole for a pin in it. The Safety Thimble is actually manufactured and marketed by Tough Stuff Products. It should be up on the website fairly soon.

The first revision just had a round hole for a pin and sometimes two shackles were needed to attach to stuff and that sort of defeated the purpose of KISS.

so you pretty much enlarged the hole to be able to pull shackles through it and changed the shape from round to teardrop then?

The depth of the rope groove was increased to slow down abrasion on the rope loop. The diameter of the through holes was increased to 7/16's to improve compatibility with the various braid constructions of the 3/8's lines. The thickness of the eye was increased and the overall diameter of the body was bumped up to eliminate any chance of the stop portion cocking sideways in the rollers. The eye being shaped like that also makes it more compatible with the various diameters of tow hooks folks use.

That pear-shape should help a good bit. Fitting a hook or shackle was one of the problems I've run into with mine -- actually, about the only problem.

Don't even have to remove it from the rope. Just clamp it in a vise and drill about a 9/16's to 5/8's hole near the relief wall for the eye. Connect the sides with a hacksaw or jigsaw. I used a sawzall on one that I did, and file smooth or use a dremel to smooth. Works perfectly. If you use a hacksaw, get one with a coarse tooth. The material is 6061 t-6 and not real friendly to hand work.
