D30 vs HP D30 diff covers

Grrrrrr, Dan just noticed (he's doing a HP D30 swap also), that the diff fill plug is in a different place (higher) on the HP D30 than on the D30..
So much for transfering my kinda recently purchased T&J diff cover over to my new HP D30, when I get it finished

don't they just sell one version? for both LP and HP d30s? i don't see why it won't work on the new axle.

Not the same. The fill plug is much higher on the HP than it is on the LP axle. I didn't think anything about it until I was cleaning the HP cover and saw that it had a mark about "reverse rotation" and compared it to the one on the Jeep. Glad I noticed before I put Fred's old LP stock cover on.....that would've been bad.

How about just jacking the front end up a couple feet and then adding the fluid, similar to what you do when you have a rotated rear axle due to a CV shaft.

I don't think my jack will go high enough. There is quite a bit of difference in the position. I put the HP cover over the LP and marked where the hole is in comparison - you can see how much higher the HP hole is.

Funny thing I just noticed while looking at the pic - the LP cover has the same "REV" stamp on it. I had figured that had something to do with the reverse rotation of the HP axle, but maybe not....

Thats not a reverse rotation axle. It's a HP axle that uses reverse cut gears. Don't know what the REV means. Probably revision or something like that.

You could leave the low pinion plug in, then drill and install another plug at the place that is correct for the HP. It wouldn't be too hard, you could probably even use one of those tranny plan drain plug kits from summitracing or jegs.
