Unhappy You don't win every day

Ok, I agree, stock market is a gamble. I was expecting Oracle to do poorly in the first quarter, and shorted their shares at $10.63 a piece.

Instead, they beat all expectations and just reported the net income of $509 million. I admit my mistake, and just purchased their shares to cover at $10.90 a piece through ECN.

Now, back to potted meat.

Can you invest in a potted meat company? That might be your best bet!

I had fun shorting Krispy Kreme (KKD) all the way down from 45. The one I really missed was Taser (TASR)!!!! I saw a demo of their unit at a local manufacturing show back in Jan '03 and thougt what a great tool this was. Unfortunately, I had just started a new job working on straight commission and did not want to spend any money on a hunch. I could have bought in at $3.00

ConAgra Foods, Inc.

I sure can. Can you tell me if the price of their stock will go up or down?

Dang! That thing is trading at 86 times the earnings with over milliard dollars of market capitalization. Not bad for a stunt gun company! It's been outperforming the market almost 4 times. Wall Street analysts don't like the stock for some reason; looks good to me, their gross profit has been going up steadily with positive chash flow since the third quarter of 2003.

Why did you short Oracle? I would have figured their business to be booming with government contracts in homeland security at the very least.

What accounts for their recent numbers?

Because I am an idiot.
Most software companies have been missing expectations lately, and I thought I had a better than 33% chance. Err, I mean I thought I had only a 33% chance to loose...

What accounts for their recent numbers?
$563 mill in new software license sales (up 7%), $1.2 billion in updates and support (up 14%), $476 mill in services (down 7%). Total revenues: $2.215 billion (up 7%).

Net income: $509 mill (up 16%).

They are still making money on the proven database technology. Whatever new crap they are doing, is loosing money of course, but the database cash cow is covering all the losses and then some handsomely.

Wow, ORCL is trading at $11.29 right now, and that's while the markets are down ! God bless the ECNs (electronic trading networks that let you exchange securities when the markets are closed). If I waited until morning, I would loose more than twice as much.

I work in government - Bill gates and Oracle have pretty much a monopoly on things. You should have asked me for my opinion Sergey - I would have set you straight

Look at the market today

Dang! My portfolio is down $400 today. Laughably, the only stock in my portfolio that gained some money intraday is the potted meat company stock.

ConAgra Foods Inc. (CAG) rose 0.6 percent or 15 cents to $25.96 despite posting lower quarterly profits on Wednesday due to higher ingredient costs and the sale of its chicken and agricultural products businesses

Exclamation

I am an idiot! I've done it again. I shorted Apple.

I am debating on whether to buy now through the ECN, before the prices jump even more in the morning. Or, wait for 30 days and write off the losses.

Naw, screw it, I am covering. It's getting too close to margin call to be comfortable. $863 lost in one day. My new record!

You should keep your money in a coffee can in the pantry or invest it in bonds or blue chips for the long term. The stock market ain't what it used to be.

You are a little late with that advice Jeff. I am fresh out of money.

Does anybody want to hire me?

You mean, even more than I've done already?

I don't know if it is possible.
