Stacie meets Blaine

The phone rings last night.....from the back of the house, Stacie, my step-son's girl friend, yells out "I'll get it". She was waiting for an incoming call.

Stacie: Hello
Blaine: Hello, may I speak to Stu?
Stacie: Yes, may I ask who is calling?
Blaine: Yes
.
.
.
.
.
.
.
.
.
.
Long silence.....
.
.
.
.
.
.
Eventually, Stacie asked Blaine who he was.
.
.
.
Blaine: Blaine
Stacie: OK, I'll get Stu

After the phone call, I went back to explain Blaine to Stacie. Donna overheard the conversation and broke out in laughter. She asked Stacie, "What did you expect him to say? You asked him if you could ask who was calling."

Stacie now has a better understanding of what to say when Blaine calls again. I am not sure she will remember though....20 year olds are like that.

Exactly, how does one explain Blaine?

Doesn't everyone

answer the question that was asked? I see nothing unusual with the conversation at all.

Yeah - but you got him good a couple weeks ago.

Blaine - Where are you?
Kathryn (on cell phone) - At the stop sign.
Blaine - .................................................. ..................

Stu - I try to keep the phone away from my wife when I know Blaine is going to call - just makes it easier.

All that pertinence started about 10 years ago. I have a friend who is a big wuckamuck at a very large development company. I was teaching him how to improve his shotgunning skills and as a result came to interacting on a conversational level.

He was one of the first I ever encountered that did not engage in circle speak. We would be talking, he would ask something and I would ramble about everything that I could think of until finally he would stop me with "Just exactly what question was that the answer to?"

Made me really examine my communication style and I set about changing it to be more pertinent which is now mainly misconstrued as impertinence.

Everyonce and a while, Blaine will call my office. During a brief period of time there was a young lady, 7 - 8 months pregnant, who was Puerto Rican and from New York. She had severe problems with her attitude, (so they sent her to me, pregnant and an attitude issue.. my speciality I guess). And after sometime I had her able to control and respond well to just about anyone. So Blaine calls, and I can here her:

"Hello, XXX North Island, SN XXXXX speaking, can I help you?"

"Ok, can I ask who's calling?"

"Can I ask who's calling please?"

"Can you hold a moment please?"

She carefully places her hand over the phone reciever and says "PN1 there's some smart @$$ mother@#$%#$ on the phone and he won't tell me who the @#$#@ he is! I'm gonna hang up on his @#$@# @$$"

Knowing it's Blaine, I pick up the phone.

In an attempt to explain "about Blaine", I simply tell her:

Blaine's the god father of the Jeep mafia, and if you're not carefull, he'll send people down to drive over your car.

She never had a problem again, and I think she actually believed it.

Blaine sometimes had 5 minute conversations with people who answer the phone... All about who was calling.

I see no problem at all with the way Blaine is. I'm the same way.

Typically when I write a check at a store, the clerk will ask if I have any identification. I'll answer yes. Then I wait. If they don't ask to see it, I don't offer.

So what's the problem? They ask a question and I answer it. I make no assumptions as to their need or desire for any more information than what they asked.
