nidacore - home built camper

I thought a few of you weight weenie campers might enjoy this article. This couple (one of them is a mechanical engineer for Robinson Helicopter, the other a profesional surfer) built a camper for the back of their truck out of Nidacore, a very light/strong composite panel.

Heres the full story -

Navigating the blog is kind of tricky, in the upper right side under "blog archive" click the arrow next to 2006 and then the arrow next to September.

I didn't get a chance to go through the article yet, did they show how they bonded the corners anywhere?

Cloth and resin, I believe. On the critical corners they used aluminum angle to reinforce.

How sturdy is that? It seems like it would be a bad idea to go over 35 mph or it would all blow apart.

I read the accident blog. Given the hit, it is amazing to see how well it held up. The extra cab of the truck sustained a lot more damage than the camper itself. Only the skirt was ripped off.

The material used is the same stuff they use to make bulkheads in boats that hold the whole hull in shape and give it strength.

/\/\/\ I flipped through their blog and after seeing the photo of the guy standing on a board suspended between two workhorses, I figured it was probably strong enough.

LOL

that was a really cool blog. there were a number of things keeping it interesting. the trailer is very nice, the girl is pretty, and they had some interesting trips.
the selection of chilis is a mighty fine one as well.
i like it.

I read their blog - I'm very impressed their camper didn't come apart in that accident. that is pretty damn cool.

I did also find my next rig

where to buy nidacore?

I noticed they listed the cost of the nidacore for their camper at approx $3600.

Where the heck do you buy nidacore?

I wonder how much they wasted?

First source I found was $229 for a 1/2" 4x8 sheet.

Some interesting info on nidacore:

"The panels are easy to cut with hand tools. The panels can be used just as plywood panels but are lighter and stiffer. Ideal for soles (cockpit and cabin), decks, bulkheads and generally all boat interior parts where light weight, extra stiffness and insulation are critical. A 4x8' 1/2" panels weighs 26 lbs compared to 1/2" Meranti with only one layer of 12 oz. biaxial on each side at 60 lbs."
