Steering Stabilizer Purpose?

Just what are these things suppose to do?
I threw the one on my Dodge truck away after bending the second one up. I've never missed it.
I was test driving my Jeep with the new Currie steering without the stabilizer and didn't notice a difference. I ran the Currie phase one without it for a long time because I buggered up the threads on one of the the u-bolts and kind of forgot about it.
I know they must be there for a good reason! But I've never figured out what?

I find that they do help keep the steering wheel a bit more under control when I am on the trail. They are a 50/50 compress extend shock....so they oppose a change in direction equally. Those smaller boulders that want to tear the wheel out of your hands would do so more easily if it were not for the stabilizer.

Is that an OK reason?

I believe that even if you power steering is taking most of the 'jump' out of the steering wheel, the stabilizer still helps protect you steering box from getting jarred as hard.
