Question Auto vs. Auto (vs. Auto)

Hi all...
So, with all this talk that manuals are junk I was wondering what the prefered auto is for swaping purposes ?

I know that 999's are probably the easiest, but what about the XJ 4spd ? (what is that anyways, an Aisin ?) Would be nice to have a 4spd.

What about the t350 and t400 ?
Both good trannys. Except for the adapter costs they should be cheaper overall to swap. Are the lengths comparable to the 999 and XJ trans ?

Are there any tricks to getting any of these trannys into manual equiped jeeps ?
What about neutral/reverse switch wiring. Anything else ?

kris.

Everything you probably need to know, including wiring, on putting an AW-4 into a TJ.

Thanks Stu. (and Scott)
Very informative, probably too much info.
Should have mentioned its a 258 yj. Peujunk is taking a dump (finally, at 150k). Will not having an OBD computer complicate this or make it easier ?
From what I could tell, the TCM needs a signal from a TPS.... Hmmm.... Pin 17...
I dont have one.... Anyways...
Looks pretty straightforward, 999 is probably a more realistic option though.

Any idea how to get around the TPS ?

Thanks again,
kris.

Kris: The Peugot trans. OAL is 24" and uses a 21 spline output shaft. The TH350 OAL is 21.50". The TH400 OAL is 24.50". The 999 with adapter plate is 22-5/8" OAL.
To use a TH350 or TH400 you will need Advance Adapter P/N 716138A, adapter and P/N 716138B, flexplate. These will total around $450-500. You might have clearance problems with your front driveshaft. With the TH400 you won't have any electronic wiring glitches, I don't believe with the TH350 either. You will also have to adapt to the transfer case. Going with the GM auto's does not seem to be very cost effective-my $ .02.

Kris,

If I remember correctly, nn the first go around, Scott had the OBDII connections backwards from the TCM going to the TJ's computer. Aside from preventing scanner access to the TCM, that was about the only issue I can remember.

However, I don't know how to get around the TPS issue and I would believe that to be a necessary signal for proper operation.

Kris,

Read the OBD2 section of my writeup. In that section I talk about how I ultimately disconnected the OBD2 tie in to the TJ harness. Since then others have done this on YJ's too. Just about every question you might have will be answered in my writeup. If you print it out it makes 66 pages of good bathroom reading material.

I did.
But unless I'm misunderstanding the dis-conecting of the CCD bus and SCI transmit wires this doesn't answer the question on getting around the TPS on a carbuerated motor.
Did the others that have doen this on yj's have 4.0's or 4.2's?
BTW...
Definately above bathroom reading...

Thanks...
kris.

Kris,

It definitely needs a TPS input to help it decide when to shift. You will have to figure out how to rig that up.
