Cherokee auto trans vs. TJ auto?
Will a Cherokee (87-91) auto tranny bolt up to a TJ? Are they different? I am assuming that both bolt up to a 231 T-case?
The reason I am asking, can a person with a manual TJ bolt a Cherokee auto in with little or no hassles? |

I'm not 100% sure but I believe that it will bolt up to the engine as well as the tcase without adapters. However, the XJ auto trans is computer controlled so in addition to the trans, you'll need the computer and wiring harness to go along with it. The XJ tranny is longer so mods will need to be made to the crossmember and tranny mount. The tcase shifting linkage will change too and possibly the shifter cable for the trans. You might also want to investigate the location of the crank sensor on the early XJ. The TJ has it mounted on the auto trans bell housing. Dunno about the XJ.

Thanks Brad. Does not sound like a simple "drop-in" type of mod. This is what I get for thinking when seeing several Cherokee's with auto's in the boneyard.
