Power Steering Woes

Ok. I'm officially frustrated enough to beg for help. I installed a new power steering system yesterday (Lee 808 box, with high flow pump and remote reservoir). For the life of me, I cannot get it bled well enough to get rid of the mechanical feel in the steering wheel and the whine. I have bled, rebled and bled again til my shoulders are sore. The power steering DOES work, however.

My questions.

1. Should a high flow pump and box be basically quiet?
2. There are NO bubbles in the res. the fluid level is constant, WTF???

Help. I got til wednesday to leave for sierra trek. I need counsel.

Thanks.
Seth

Yeah. Its bled right. No question about it.

I'm being led to believe that this is cavitation caused by the high flow pump. Supposedly it goes away.

I'm hoping tomorrow.

grr...

Seth - I feel your pain. Bleed, bleed, bleed, and then bleed again. After 7 or so iterations of the routine of jackstand, crank it over, 40 turns of the wheel stop to stop, repeat if you can mine is basically bled and working as it should. I still occasionally get some whine and am going to bleed one more time before the Rubicon trip but at this point it's good enough. Not sure what the deal is with this combination of components, I've talked to plenty of people that don't know why this one is so tough to get the air out of.

Seth,

Did you try to pull the coil wire and bump the motor over a couple of revolutions? If you have, do it a couple of more times. Drive it around a bit, come back and do the entire procedure over a couple of times.

Well... having spoken with Lee this morning, I feel better. As he explained it to me, they opened up the pump that I have a LOT. They also removed some of the stuff that smooths the pump and makes it quieter.

He said run it and it should get a little better over time.

Seth,

You and Ron should get together and have a road party to a tune of 5k miles to see if both of your mods quiet down to satisfaction level.

Could be worse, I guess. I could have the noisy pump, the Teralow AND the urethane tranny mount still installed....

Or worse, I could own my original TJ with the 4 cyl...
