body repair.
I just obtained a CJ7 with a fair bit of body rust, the largest patch is about 6"by 8" . Most are small (3"dia) and a all go throught the body. There are about 10 areas of rust on the body, just on the sides behind the front wheel well, and around the doors, and the aft wheel well.
I come from a background of sailing and boat repair. I have done a lot of fiberglass 'body' work on sailboat hulls/deck, but never on steel. I am hoping for some advice on how to start fixing this problem. I work now in a metal fabricration shop, dealing mostly with stain(s a bit)lesssteel and alum. Would i be better cutting off bad areas to weld plate in place of the rthese areas, and then fair in the reapir, or to remove the rusted metal with a grinder to clean steel, prime and do a 'glass repair in this area? Or are there other techniques used ? Thanks for your help Brian |

Well,
I feel bad that nobody has bother to respond to your rust issues and questions. You can't really blame the SoCal guys either. They see rust about as often as they see snowflakes. Never..... As for the rest of us, rust is really treated on a case by case basis. Obviously, sheetmetal patches are best, but if you're better with glass and can deal with it's shortcomings on an offroad vehicle, then go with that. If it were me, I'd weld in sheetmetal patches.
