Reading this thread, it's is obvious that I'm not the only one crossing out the days on my calendar until the trip. If it's any indication how long it has been for me, I had to clear out some spiderwebs out of my Jeep this evening. On the bright side, I just called my insurance company today and was able to get my policy changed to low mileage. They figure that it is less likely to get damaged since I only drive it a few thousand miles a year.

I strongly suggest spectating first and driving after you know what to expect. That way your far more nervous.

.5 ? for tossing rock to get your attention.
.10 ? for putting rocks under the driver?s front tire.
.15 ? for putting rocks under the passenger?s side front tire.
.20 ? for putting rocks under the driver?s rear tire.
.25 ? for putting rocks under the passenger?s side rear tire.
.30 ? for putting rocks under a combination of any two tires.
.50 ? for putting more than one rock anywhere near your Jeep.
.75 ? for telling you to ?Bump It? and then having to stack rocks when you don?t.

$1.00 for going down the trial to get more rocks because you have spun your tires and now all of the rocks I put there have been thrown down the trail by your lack of throttle control.

$1.50 for finding the ?Perfect Rock? that?s just big enough to get you unstuck.

I?m just kidding I?m looking forward to the Rookie run.

Kat
It's the "Perfect Rock" portion of this that leaves me concerned, Kat.

I work in government, and the decision as to what is "Perfect" cannot be left to one person. Hence, a small "Perfect Rock" judging committee will need to be formed of an odd number of people composed of a mixture of experienced and novice 4x4 trail drivers, as well as other political organizations; a commitee of 9 should suffice.

A scoring system for the "Perfect Rock" based on size and shape will need to be developed. Then an impartial scoring tabulator, who has no involvement in the stacking, driving, scoring, or collecting of funds, will tally the scores and determine if the score meet the acceptable minimum for the "Perfect Rock" score. Of course, we'll need to survey other clubs, trails, organizations, and some uninvolved citizens to arrive at an acceptable minimum score for the "Perfect Rock".

Obviously I'm in training to be a consultant, so I'm glad I could help out...

The rookie run is our way of introducing folks to trails that are both difficult to find and sometimes difficult to navigate.

It's very low pressure, mistakes are highly tolerated, nervousness is expected, trepidation is welcomed.

If you find that you enjoy the company and venue and would like to continue the insanity, the core group winds up out there about twice a month until the end of April.

You'll know after the first one if you wish to continue.

You need to continue your training then because any good consultant would have attached his price quote for forming and managing the perfect rock identification steering committee, and for writing the final report which would suggest that there really is no perfect rock to be found except with further investigation.

Or, you would simply invite Kat out to dinner, bribe her with some floor seats to the Lakers playoffs and then sit back while your sole source contract was being written

All I can say is Sledgehammer turned out to be everything I expected and then a little more when I did the rookie run last year... it was that the steep-a$$ DROP-OFF on that sandy descent just after Sledgehammer that scared the crap out of me.

I can see you're very familiar with government work also!

Sole source was too much to expect. Sealed bids was anticipated.

And for the second paragraph, I wouldn't want to get on the bad side of the Mr. in the family...as he'll probably be spotting me over some rocks in the near future and I wouldn't want him to express any displeasure at my swooning his wife by questionable spotting.

"A little more to the left, Darrell. Yep, that's it. Now bump it!"

Erik is correct. The meet and greet is NOT the JV Rookie run.

I will email dates and information to the group that's contacted me.

I'd like to clarify that the date is not secret, it's just not published. It's a self defense maneuver designed to allow control over who shows up uninvited. It also gives us a way to limit the size of the group to something manageable and therefore more enjoyable for all concerned.

What can I say? If it's just you, me and your Jeep, you can pick the "perfect" rock and place it in the "perfect" positon all by your lonesome as I sit in the shade, sip ice cold water and take pictures

I'm a good spotter too! I can hang your Jeep up on every rock on the trail if given the chance Just ask Brian

Jerry, the only time I saw that sand hill was with Rich's rock lights on-it got my attention real quick-and kept it too! Thankfully, I was just along for the ride and not driving.
BTW: When it is dark out there-it is really dark.

Post Comfort items to bring

Here's the list I sent Chris L for his first trip, you might find some of the items useful.

Comfort items:
  • Dry washcloths in Ziploc bags (several). I keep some in the Jeep, clothes bag and dry food bag (you add water to the bag and then wash up).

    Lip balm (chap stick).

Benedryl, stick or spray for bug bites. Blaine got bite by an ant last time and it made a nasty bump.

Aspirin for caffeine headaches or muscle aches.

    Lotion for dry skin.

Eye drops, the dust is killer on the eyes.

Items for a sponge bath, wash cloth and towel. I take one every night before bed when camping.

    Sunglasses and a hat

    Gloves

Toothbrush and paste, hair brush or comb.

Comfy footwear to wear around camp and to slip on for when you have to go in the middle of the night, always wear some kind of footwear.

    A pillow

One of those 2.5-gallon water things with the spout, great for washing up and camp soap.

A chair, and one of those large umbrellas

A small movers blanket, you can get them at Osh. Great for lying on if you have to work on the Jeep, you can also sit on it, or use it to keep warm.

A trash container for your Jeep, nylon net bag with draw string, i.e. laundry bag from Wal-marts, or something similar.

Leatherman, has more uses than I can list. or generic equivalent.

That?s all I can think of for now. I should put together an official list to check off for each trip.

I hope you found this helpful.

Q tips, and lots of them.

A small backpack/tote bag is quite handy for keeping the stuff you need to access nearby.

Don't forget a small first aid kit with at least band-aids, gauze pads, tape and sissors.

With the kit that Blaine is bringing you could perform anything from an amputee to spleen removal, and even a butterfly patch or two . I also have seen his upgraded ready welder that has the skin grafting spool gun

Oh, fortunately I didn't need to see his kit when I was out there. sounds like he's got a mini-ambulance in that thing too.
