I think I figured out why TJs use a smaller oil filter. Last time when I was removing the larger filter, I spilled hot oil all over myself trying to remove the thing out sideways. Yesterday, I was changing oil again, and removed the smaller filter without spilling a drop. I put a new larger filter; I guess it is going to be an oil bath time again in 5000 miles. Unless I find a better way to remove the larger filters outta there?

I stand on a plastic milk crate supplied by a Dairy as it was being bought out. I position my catch-container directly underneath and unscrew the filter allowing the outer end to tip down as it is removed. I get maybe a few drops on the side of the engine. Never tried it without the catch container (It would be the total contents with my luck) I pour new oil into the new filter until it is about 1/3 full. I use Mobil-1 301 (Large size) filters. I then lower it into the engine bay mount side up. I tilt it into position and start the threads. I don't spill any using this method. I only drain the oil from the bottom. All other work is done top side No oil-bath for me.

Put a large plastic zip bag around the filter when it's about to come off. That is, after you put a paper towel under the filter. Do this job from the top! Your little brother will make a fine stool.
