Tires replaced, new springs front and rear, new bump stops all around, six new rod ends in the control arms, welded cracked control arm brackets, straightened drag link. Thank you very much to Blaine, Kat, and Robert. My jeep hasn't been riding this good for very long time. I can let the steering wheel go and the jeep will go straight for a 1/4 mile on highway. I guess, sagged rear springs shifted the axle, and that's why it was pulling to the right before.
The jeep goes to John's shop on Monday for the front ARB and rear diff service, and it will be ready for another weekend at JV. |

However the locker is not out of the jeep yet, so we'll have to wait for the coroner's office?. err? gear shop report on the official cause of death. The family has given permission to perform autopsy. The Ox locker served well for what it seems to be 11 expeditions to Johnson Valley, and a great number of deployments to the places where the uneasy life of a traction device took it. Friends remember it as a reliable piece of equipment. The locker will be missed, and remembered. Even in death the locker did not give up its post. With the last grasp of cautions it froze in the locked position, allowing the jeep to finish the trail. Truly a heroic and selfless act. Sleep well Ox locker. You deserve the rest. |

Is it just the ability to unlock the arb if desired? Just curious. |

With a selectable at least there are occasions when I can reduce the stresses on the rest of the components by running open. Spooled always loads the steering and trackbar. Every little bit helps.

Ok, the report is in. The spider gears are what broke in the Ox locker. Then little pieces jammed and seized the locker.
The ring and pinion will have to be replaced too. |

Damn Sergey - thats 2 ring and pinons in the past year for you. Maybe you should buy stock in some gear companys, eh.

I think Sergey would stop breaking gears and lockers with a simple throttle return spring swap... like his throttle return spring for something more in line with the kind of spring used to lift up a garage door.

Of course I would stop breaking gears and lockers. I would also stop moving.

My jeep is fixed. All that's left to do is route the ARB line and switch for the front locker. I got lucky this time around, out of pocket money to fix the jeep were just under $2500, and we got it back up and running under 2 weeks.
Now, the final news on the Ox locker. There was no evidence found to support the spring-loaded shifter backfire theory. Therefore, scratch that. Spider gears broke, badly. Possibly a little piece got jammed in the ring and pinion after that and cracked teeth on the pinion gear. |

I can't just stop breaking stuff overnight. I need a plan, I need a support group, I need a tax credit, I need a big company or a fast food chain to blame for my problems.

Glad to hear things are coming back together. If $2500 to fix the jeep is lucky, I'd hate to hear bad luck

I wonder what could I do with $2500 if I didn't spend it on the jeep and didn't go wheeling? What do people who don't jeep do? Throw a party and get a hooker maybe...

It may actually be a good idea. Can I hook my trailer to your jeep, so you can take me over the hammers? I'll put a cooler and a cabana there. Maybe even a charcoal barbecue.... |
