Tranny skid

Any thoughts on a tranny skid for an '03 TJ with a 3 speed auto and deep pan? It's got the RE crossmember, but the crossmember has been raised and mimics the '02 and earlier TJ's.

I was surprised at how exposed that tranny pan is.

Full Traction sells a tranny skid which mates to their belly skid. I wanted oil pan protection as well so I had the 4X Doctor fab up a one piece smooth skid which bolts to the belly pan and connects to the motor mount mounts in the front. I don't have any pics, but it is similar to what Robert has on his Jeep and I think he has posted pics before.

You have an '03 with a 3 speed???

Toys by troy is working on one, but is not in production yet. Ask Stu about it, or go to troy's page and ask him.

Yep. It's a special "one-off" version that uses an '02 3 speed auto, the backup light plug and connector harness from an '01, a modified '03 RE crossmember that gives the same clearance as the '02 and earlier crossmember using the stock 241 t-case, a complete '02 brake pedal with underdash bracket that's been modified to work with the '03 brakelight switch, and a custom exhaust hanger and tranny mount.

BTW...know anyone that wants to buy a NV3550?

Engine Skid

The guys at Boulder bars fabbed this one up for me - it was originally designed to be used with the RE long Arm kit so it would be no problem for them to set you up Darrell. It had to be modified slightly in my case to mate with my Currie skid plate and not interfere with my hi pinion front axle. Its not going anywhere. After bending up all kinds of skids made out of 3/16ths and ripping the ears off my bellhousing - I finally did it right with this one - 1/4" plate with side gussetting attached to the center skid and motor mounts.

Robert, does it attach to the motor mounts up front? If so, how?

Mine looks pretty much the same as Robert's picture. Up front it mounts to the frame mounts for the motor mounts. If you're looking to fab one up yourself or have it done up there, I'll take some pics to give you ideas.

do you know if this would be a direct bolt on replacement for an ax-15? I'm thinking it must be, but I've been wrong before.

is 1st gear still 4.04:1?

maybe could use it as a spare.

Yes, first gear is 4.04:1. Should bolt up no problem. 23 spline output shaft. Not sure if the length is identical, but it'd be easy to measure and find out. The NV 3550 is 24" long.

My image is intact - that was the first take at it and we rattle canned it before I went to TDS where testing indicated that it needed to be trimmed in a few spots. Its now trimmed and fully powdercoated.

You know, I don't mind posting pics but I'm not posting them for folks to blatently copy. The guys at Boulderbars put alot of time into figuring out the skid mounts and I'm sure they would appreciate a little business as it is a product they sell. I'm thinking that if you want to build a skid, you also shouldn't have any problem with putting the time into figuring it out.

That's fair enough, Robert. I didn't mean to put you in an uncomfortable position, or compromise your ethics. If I headed down that road, I apologize.

Truth is, I haven't even begun to seriously plan that project. I'm planning additional lift to the motor and a replacement HP rear axle, followed by additional height to the tranny and t-case which will necessitate revising the crossmember again, or replacing it. Only after all that is done, will I consider the tranny skid.

Contacting the guys at Boulderbars will be top of my list when I get there.

No problem Darrell - I wasn't singling you out - more of a general irritation which is why I won't post those pix up on other boards any longer.

Robert, I can understand not wanting people to copy a design that you had put time into. I am looking at different ideas. I had never even thought of using the MM as a mounting point. I was contemplating just getting a Skid row one and be done with it, but a friend of mine said he would help me make something. I also was looking at a TBT one, but I am not crazy about how it mounts. Probably not an issue for me, but the MM/t-case monting looks like the way to go. I do appreciate the pics you and Jeff posted. And it is for me, not like I am going to go into production or anything.
