Angry Dead battery ? NO SMOG CHECK

My jeep has been sitting in the garage for the whole summer. Today I decided to go SMOG it. But the jeep wouldn?t start ? the battery had discharged. I jump started the jeep and drove to the smog station.

To my dismay it failed the inspection. It passed the emissions test and visual inspection but failed the functional check.

?This vehicle failed the MIL/Check Engine Light Test due to failure to successfully complete all OBD self tests.?

The technician said, that?s because there is no history in the jeep computer memory; that I should replace the battery and drive the jeep 60-70 miles.

How accurate is the technician's recommendation, where should I go and buy a good battery, and what largest size Odyssey replaces the stock battery with no modifications?

A dead or disconnected battery will clear the computer's engine memory Sergey, the tech is right that you'll need to drive it around that far to rebuild the memory. The engine will often even run rough for a while until it relearns all of the parameters it needs.

If the battery just went dead from lack of use, maybe it's still ok. I think I'd wait to replace the battery, or maybe have Pep Boys/Autozone just do a quick load test on it to see if it's ok.

He is correct. I had the same problem. When I got to the smog place I meantioned that the battery was disco'd, so he ran a computer scan. I guess it shows that the battery was disconnected and he suggested I drive it a little. So after driving 60 miles (3 seperate 20 mile trips, he kept telling me to drive more), I said screw it and went to the rubicon. I still paid the reg. to avoid late fees. They just sent me a letter calling me an idiot and told me to get it smogged.

My suggestion to anyone would be to have the computer scanned before the test. The Tech guy might be cool enough to do it free of charge. Even if the Check engine light isnt on, there still could be a hidden problem that would cause it to fail the test.

Stupid computers!

What is the drive cycle for Jeep vehicles?

And does anybody have an OBD II scanner, I can borrow, that can do the manual mode readiness test?

Ok, I ordered a PC1200LMJT from btteryweb.com.

Now I need to find an OBD II scanner that can run those tests. I don't know much about OBD scanners, how can I identify if a scanner can retrieve those codes or not? Would any cheap scanner do? My check engine light is not on.

here are a couple pf links for this. i have read that resetting the monitors on a chrysler vehicle will work the same as the ford drive cycle. you're gonna love this

sergey, i have an auto x ray if you would like to try it. i am pretty sure this thing shows readiness monitors.

i suggest trying the ford drive cycle.
let me know if you want to try the auto x ray.

have a look at the links i posted in the previous post. it isnt that simple. it can be a royal pain in the ass to reset these things. on the ranger i drove over 1000 miles without knowing the procedure to no avail. after finding out the ridiculous procedure it was about 100 miles.

Holy crap, those drive cycle procedures are nearly unbelievable. They'd be totally unbelievable if it weren't for the liberals/EPA whackos that make them believable.

You folks walking up on smog stations need a reality check - they are no different than speed traps. Never ever just drop in and think your vehicle will pass. ALWAYS get a pre-test, especially if your vehicle sits or is older. The last thing you want on your vehicles' smog record are test failures. Line enough of them up and you get tossed into gross polluter status and that will cause you to go to a test only station every year. Smogs are not to be taken lightly at all.

I passed the test.

Here is how:

First I purchased a code scanner. I bought an Autoxray 1500, but any scanner that can display emissions readiness would do.

On my jeep there are seven monitors:

Misfire
Fuel System
Comp. Components
Catalyst
Evap. System
O2 Sensor
O2 Sensor Heater

The first three monitors are continuous, and they will always be in ready state, unless something is wrong. Other monitors are triggered only when certain enabling criteria are met.

The most troublesome out of those monitors to trigger are the Catalyst and the Evap. System. I did not obtain the actual drive cycle procedures, but I was told on the OBD forum that,

?for EVAP: the fuel level needs to be between 15-85%, the ambient temp sensor and engine coolant sensors must be between 40-90 degrees on start-up (as well as within 10 degrees of each other).

For Catalyst: Drive the vehicle in 4th gear if a manual. This appears to be tested according to the drivecycle [sic] at a steady speed on the highway.

The battery has now been sent to recycling, and will pollute the atmosphere once it is shipped out for smelting to a third world country.

It never leaked, though, just vented a little.

I just passed yet another SMOG check. I have the most amount of trouble with the EVAP. monitor. Catalyst is also a finicky one, but consistent highway driving seems to set it ok.

With the EVAP. monitor, all what I am reading on the Internet points that the fuel level must be between ? and ? full. However in my experience this won’t set until the fuel level is below ?.

That is on my ’99 TJ.
