Back from Moab

Donna and I pulled into Phx about 4:30 this afternoon, after 9.5 hours on the road. Nice drive back....it only got warm once we dropped out of the mountains by Flagstaff.

We had a great time. Did 5 days on the trail and 2 days of travel time.

We happened to meet two couples from CA (the Fresno area....give or take a bit) on the 3rd day and managed to run two trails with them. Both of these guys run the Dusy/Ershim multiple times a year (recently as last month).

ROBERT.....we have a standing invitation to run the Dusy. I've been guaranteed that if neither of these guys are available when we want to do it, they will find one of the local club members to go with us!

I should tell you about their rigs....nicely done. Both were running CJ-7s. One was spring under with 35" Swampers, TeraLow in the D-300 t-case and a NV4500 with 6.3 (or so) 1st gear. He could crawl slower than a baby, which was good because Andy is an old guy....probably put more years ont the trail than I have been living. The other CJ was sporting 39.5x17" Swampers with a spring over suspension. Robert's driveline was the same basic setup as Andy's, except that he was running fully with Waggie axles on his. His paint job, now 8 years old, was to die for.

Anyway, Moab was great, the company was great (got our friends from Phoenix hooked on it for sure), and the food was great too.

We ran Moab Rim, Fins n' Things, Steel Bender (both sections), Poison Spider Mesa, and Cliff Hanger. I shall never forget the 4' ledge on Cliff Hanger.

My front driveshaft CV joint is due for a rebuild. It starting the squeaking routine while at Moab so it is time to take care of that now.

I am swapping out the rear Procomp coils for a higher spring rate coil....probably 4.5" RE coils. With the hard top and the rest of my current setup, the back end squats too much. I am keeping the front coils....they are doing great.

Well, I guess that is about it for now. Sounds like everyone else was having a pretty good time tihs past week as well. Sounds like the JV trails got a good work out!

Stu,
Glad you had a good time. You meet the nicest people Jeepin' eh?
I particularly liked the first few miles of Steelbender for the scenery. I took my dog up there several times during my stay to hike around and play in the stream.
That obstacle on Cliff Hanger is definitely a sight!
Are we going to get some pictures?
Ron

Ron,

Yes....that first section of Steel Bender (Mill Creek if memory serves me correctly) is so pretty. There was a nice bit of water flowing through there when we ran it.

Yeah....there will be some pics put up. Most of mine are digital video. My buddy did the majority of the digital stills and I'll be gettinga CD-R from him with some 350+ pics on it (the guy loves to take pictures).

I am processing some video (for the web site) that shows what can happen to you in Moab when you drop your concentration for a second or two. Really nice footage (I am doing it in slow motion) of my friend going off a good sized ledge (not realizing it was there). I can say one thing.....those RE long arms sure saved his bacon. We went back afterwards and looked at it and believe he might well have gone over if he hadn't landed on the long arm first, which caused him to slide forward (and down) and got his 35" tire on the ground.

We also got one of me going up the to the top of the big slick rock dome on Moab Rim Trail. I was off the line by a few inches. It too, in slow motion, looks pretty cool.

later........Stu

Well, watch out for me Jeepers! I used to love photography many years ago but I just lost interest, I guess when the kids grew up. I enjoy seeing Jeepin' pictures so much I'm going to get back into it.
I have a fairly old Ricoh RDC-2E that works fairly good. I'm going to invest in a memory card so watch out Jeepers, another PIA with a camera!
I would like to get a digital movie camera but don't know much about them. Are they changing by the day or do they have the technology pretty well figured out? Can you take movies and stills with them? I don't have a problem waiting if what's offered today is obsolete tomarrow.
Thanks,
Ro

Ron,

I am pretty much a digital movie novice. I say this because I've had mine for about 4 months now.

But, I can say that I am most happy with it (a Sony DCR-TRV330). Many who have used camcorders much longer than I have played a bit with mine and were TOTALLY impressed with it. The picture quality is very good (for a consumer grade camera). The digitally enhanced zoom is the best I have seen (no blotchy pixels). And yes, it does take digital stills using an on-board memory stick. The quality of the stills is not up to that of my digital still camera. The reason is that the CCD (charge coupled device), the camera component that does the initial digital imaging, does not need to be of as high a quality for movies as the CCD used in digital cameras. So, since it is a digital movie camera first and a still camera second, the quality of the stills suffer a bit. They are OK, and will do in a pinch, but I like my Sony digital still camera much better (and it is 2+ year old technology now).

later.........Stu

For your viewing pleasure:

There are three movie clips here. If you don't have a high speed connection, you might wish to pass this up. The clips range from 500KB to 1.3 MB.

Wow!
I enjoyed those flicks. Scott really dumped it off that ledge. I think he had the whole Jeep off the ground for a second.
I hear you all had a good laugh at me on Escalator, well, I'll admit you just gave me a few chuckles!

I've had a digital camcorder (Sony DCR-103 or something) for a year or more. It's GREAT. It's a notch or two belong Stu's if I remember correctly (mine's smaller flip out screen).

Scott,

If you think about it....the sound would also be in slow motion, which would be pretty bad. The camera cuts out the audio feed when playing back in slow motion, so there is no sound to process.

Stu, I'll bet you about crapped when he went off that ledge so fast.
I remember the first real obstacle I went over. My son had just done it and had problems. I figured giving it the pedal was the answer and I was so proud of how easy I did it. My experienced spotter gave me a weird look, I'll never forget, and simply said, "That's how you break ****".
That was when I realized why they call it rock crawling.

Hey Stu,
Glad you and Donna had a great time and are home safe. But what I want to know is - why are there no Rubicon movies up yet

Ron,

I am glad you got a chuckle out of it. I did not see it happen, as I was about 15 seconds further down the trail (and around a corner by then). Donna caught this on video as she had been taping the both of us.

William,

Sorry buddy....I don't know what to tell you. The files stream out in Microsoft Media format. By the way.....did you ever watch the Moab footage yet? I don't think I ever got a comment from you about viewing it.

Robert,

I have decided to hold onto the Rubicon tape until you show up at my house for a personal viewing. Neither Donna nor I want to miss your facial expressions when you view the opener of the tape. Besides, you don't have a VHS deck by which to watch it anyway.

Scott,

The other thing about the audio....you can't hear it on the tape (at normal speed). Donna was several hundred yards away when that happened. The wind was blowing the sound away from her. (yes, it does have a great zoom on that camera)

I was implying about them being posted on your website and yes, I am planning to come out wheeling with you - just dealing with complications is all - see the "Take a raincheck" thread

Robert,

I don't recall any real video segments to roll onto the web site. As you already know, I posted my trip and a lot of stills there for the Rubicon trip.

I understand about the family matters....as you remember, I was kind of in the middle of that back in August, just before we did the Rubicon.

I hope all works out well for you and yours. See you in about a month.
