Smile More fun at work! ***Warning, not dial-up friendly***

Sometimes work can be soooo much fun! Here's a few pics of what we do here at work for a living (teach how to sink enemy ships & shoot Tomahawk & Harpoon Cruise Missiles).

Then at the end of the day we sit & drink hot coffee (no Starbucks, just the muddy black stuff).

The total destruction was amazing! More pics to follow if anyone is interested in what the ship looks like just prior to sinking.

Joe, it looks like the shot just barely made it into the designated kill zone. A few more feet aft and it appears that it would have taken about 2.5 seconds longer for it to sink.

Can't you get any more accurate than that?

That's cool! All I get to do at work is kick people in the face. I don't get to blow anything up!

Joe - how large was the target ship?

Simply amazing. And you built a new coral reef at the same time

Blaine, That's about as accurate as we can get. We also can fire several at the same target which will all come from different directions (and emerge on different selective aimpoints of the target), and all hit the target ship at the same exact second.....BOOMS! These can be fired from the same ship to the target, or from multiple ships at the designated enemy ship.

Seth, Sometimes a tugboat/fishing vessel style craft will have "mop-up duties". They may drag a net through the area & haul the scraps aboard for disposal.

Jeff, If I recall correctly, this vessel was ~520' long with a beam ~45'.

Bob, I'm not sure of the ships history, although it was brought out from mothballs so she would have a new resting place at sea. The downward range from designated target isn't an item I can discuss at this point. I will tell you this though....it was past normal surface search radar range. We call it "Over The Horizon Targeting", (OTHT).

Also, thanks to those who enjoyed the pics. I'll have more to follow when I get back from Perth, Western Australia later this month.

Joe,

Great pics, thanks for sharing. The power of that explosion is impressive indeed. I expected major damage and sinking, but not severing the ship in half.

How long did the front half stay afloat??

Joe,
Thank you so much for sharing your pics!!

My job is so boring my comparison! Actually, unless you enjoy embroiling yourself in support of a specification dictated by your customers, and having to force your customer within said specification, my job would probably sound boring to most people. j/k, it's very challenging and fun at times, fun travel too.

Alien, what do you do for a living?

I had a job that fit that description (well, on rare occasions when bravado+beer overuled better reason). Worked as a bouncer at a bar in Oly WA that hosted live music. Fun job, good perks (70+ different bottles and >20 on tap, fun therapy?

For those wanting to know more:

Here are some good links about this 1999 Australian sink-ex, in which the destroyer was sunk by a MK 48 torpedo fired from a submarine.

Having spent the better part of my adult life in the military (USMC) I have at times been involved in things which I could not/can not share directly; just the rules of the game that must be maintained in order to ensure security.

Some things I still can not share directly, but I can indirectly.

Sometimes I have/will present a representation; one that can be shared to make the point and get the message out without compromising security and still be found interesting to folks.

I appreciate the representation Joe has put up and understand the rational and need behind it. I think most do.

Thanks Joe,

Frank

I assumed that we all realized this too. I certainly did. I just thought that I'd provide these links about the sink-ex in question since someone asked for more info about the target ship. The images are some of the best for a sink-ex that I've seen.

The only reason that I had these links was that some old shipmates of mine from the US Navy and I have been discussing various types of sink-exercises and someone sent these links to me.

You see, a destroyer (USS HAYLER DD-997) that we commissioned and served on has recently been decomissioned. We just learned that it may become a target for a future sink-ex. So, we've been discussing our feelings about this and the different types of weapons that may be used. Some of the former crew are writing congress to try and alter such plans, while some of us think that this is a fitting end to a ship's career (as opposed to rotting away in mothballs, being scrapped and turned into rebar and pop cans, or worse being sold to another country).

Anyway, many of us felt that a torpedo hit such as this cool Australian one was the best choice since there are fewer flames than with the missile and gun exercises, and becuase the ship was afterall an anti-submarine warfare platform most of the time. Though, since HAYLER did fire Harpoons and Tomahawks in her twenty-year history, maybe Joe and his group ought to sink her that way too. Bombs from jets would be okay. No guns, however! As an old Gunners Mate, I can tell you that the 5-inch guns of today would prolong the ordeal. Now bring out a battleship and that's a different matter.

Hi Tom, what a small world!

Back in the 80's I flew a SD-60 from NAS PAX River to the HAYLER off Norfolk for some much needed night landing training.

As small as this world is, it will never reach the order of smallness of the flight deck on that boat at night!!!

Heck, they should let me have a shot at sinking it just for the fear it instilled in me!

Talking

Oh boy, do I like challenge or what? I just spent hours researching different warships.

Here is the list of US Navy warships I went trough:

AM-53 Warbler
BB-53 Iowa
CG-53 Mobile Bay
CL-53 San Diego
CV-53 ? Cancelled
CVE-53 Puncher (Willapa)
DD-53 Winslow
AKA-53 Achernar
AO-53Caliente
DE-53 Charles Lawrence
AF-53 Grommet Reefer
FFG-53 Hawes
DDG-53 John Paul Jones
AP-53 Lafayette
AK-53 Libra
CG-53 Mobile Bay
MHC-53 Pelican
CLAA-53 San Diego
AN-53 Spicewood
AVP-53 Suisun
ARS-53 Grapple

Then I started to think maybe it was not a US warship after all. Following a bit more of research, bingo, I found it! It's an Australian GP Frigate - River Class Destroyer Escort ? HMAS Torrens, commissioned on January 19th, 1971.

Here is a picture of it back in the days:

Joe, thank you for the good challenge.

Hayler absolutely did fire Tomahawks! As a matter of fact.....one of my coworkers (fellow FCC) was aboard her & was standing Tomahawk Launch Controller during events which occured in Yugoslavia (wish I were allowed to post pics of that ).

Tom, isn't that the truth. I'm not sure if you're familiar with todays Navy rates with all the merging thats been going on......but there are no more GMG's & GMM's, just GM's. Also, no FTG's & FTM's, just FC's.
