Awesome Dude!

Thanks to Sergey for all the help getting my beadlocks all bolted up and ready to roll. What a pain they are. You have to go around about 20 times with the torque wrench to make sure they all torque evenly.

This was after drilling and counterboring for the new valve stem locations, and siliconing the welds and the old valve stem location.

It's time for the balance and alignment shop.

It is double good to hear that I finally worked on a jeep other than my own. If anyone in San Diego needs a beadlock torqueing specialist, I know where you can find one cheap! Thank you for the opportunity to learn and work on your jeep Mr. Blaine!

As it turns out, I have finally discovered the reason for thinking I needed beadlocks. I didn't want them for the typical reasons, I needed some way to stop from spinning the tire on the rim. I know why now. The original rims have had the interiors powdercoated and that produces a very slick surface. Not a problem at normal tire pressure, but irritating at the lower ones.

I know some of you have lifetime balancing at your favorite tire store, but I did not. I spent enough in balancing to buy this set of beadlocks at least once. Just about the time that I get them all ready to go, America's tire starts their lifetime balancing program. No matter, they still don't have a store at the end of the trail, and driving home on unbalanced tires is no fun.

Funny,
Until yesterday, I didn't much mind unbalanced tires. Now I mind my unbalanced jeep.

Congrats on the beadlocks. they're bitchin' and I'm jealous...

That's interesting Blaine. I was also told that aluminum is "slicker" than the steel wheels and allows for that to happen. A guy told me if I had that problem I could put my tires on a steel wheel and it wouldn't happen again. Not sure I'm sold on that, but knowing MT/Alcoas are powdercoated is good to know, because mine probably are too and I may run into that problem one day. Thanks.

Ace, it was the original rims that were pc. The alcoas are not.

So Sergey.....about how many of those torque checks do you think you did on Blaine's tires? Must have been a couple of hundred at the least.

(and after finishing the last bolt on the last rim, he looks down at the torque wrench and realizes he was set 10 ft. lbs high! DOH!!!!)

It is at least a hundred and a half for each rim.

Being that it is a ring with closely spaced bolts, each subsequent torquing of a bolt changes the torque value of the adjacent bolts.

So, you wind up going around and around and around and around until you think you have it and then you check it one more time to make sure that none of them still turn.

It literally takes most of a day and this is even using a power driver to start them and take them all of the way in a few turns. Did we mention that anti-seize is also painted on each of the grade 8 bolts?

Beam Me Up Mr Blaine

I was able to get in touch with John last week and he was so helpful that I was able to get fluids for both the Atlas and the ax-15, in the same containers no less! I really appreciate the help you've been, the JB Weld is hardening on the biggest Fram gas filter you've ever seen. I think someone may mistake it for a Sun air tankmounted on the fire wall.
Taking off for CO tomorrow late morning and hope to hook up with another club member in Farmington on Monday. Hope you have a great holiday weekend!
