XJ vs TJ
XJ: longer wheelbase means worse break over angle, but more stability and more room inside. Can carry more friends and stuff. Same engines, but unibody means its lighter per inch. The XJ is actually 601 lbs lighter than a new Rubi, 335 lbs lighter than a TJ Sport. Lighter weight means better mileage, less impact on the terrain, better acceleration. Coil front, leaf rear. Simpler, but less flex. Can be less expensive for the rear leaves, but no durability differences I know of. TJ: body on frame, sturdier, tougher back bone than the XJ, but also much heavier. Both have same engines. No advantage either way. Better approach/departure/breakover angles. Tighter inside, virtually no cargo space with passengers. Full coil suspension gives decent ride and good flex What's that mean? Nothing. It depends on what you value more. Me? I value space over the better angles of the TJ. I know what my limitations are and what my advantages are. Apparently most of the people here prefer the TJ/YJ/CJ's traits. That's fine. The fact that this is getting so much discussion shows there are some feelings involved here and Sergey's (Sergey=TObject, right?) posts show some slight bias against XJs. Is there a conspiracy? No, not that I see. Everyone's just getting all bent outta shape over nothing. |

What? There was sarcasm? You bastard...I know it was all in jest. Just pointing out how maybe it could've gotten convoluted.

Yeh, looks like I was wrong again. So far that word was used on our board 4 times.
Once by mrblaine, once by Darrell C, once by Dalles2, and now by you. Must be some redneck term or something. |

I know of no one more scientific like and detailed then Dalles2. Frank dont take it personal but you give tech writters a bad name cause they dont include the detail you do.

Really, the main difference (issue) between unibody jeeps and TJs is that the unibody is a great weight/space compromise but is not that spectacular for longevity if the vehicle is being used for anything over light wheeling.
Capablity-wise, there really isn't much of a difference between any jeep, when you look at wheeling in general. This becomes more true the more you spend money on mods. Unibody jeeps make great DD, if light wheeling is the highest level of wheeling you will be doing regularly. The minute mods or moderate or heavy wheelling is thrown into the picture, the unibody is not the best way to go with regards to building up a jeep. I wheeld my ZJ on 31s and 3 inches of lift for 2 years with no issues. It was capable off road on any trail Big Bear and under and it was a great DD. I went up to 5+ inches and 33s with lockers and a year after I started to experince unibody related issues such as cracks in the unibody rails, cracked (almost off) rear UCAs and cracks in the rear hatch sill. Modding a unibody over a slight lift can lead to maintenance issues that framed vehicles don't have to deal with at the same amount of mods. In the end, it just comes down to how much do you want to have to keep track of on your "to do" maintenance list with regards to what type of jeep you are comfortable with doing mods on. |

A frame is always prefereable for any kind of hard use. Be it off-road or towing or carrying heavy loads, but you can beef the XJs "frame" up pretty good with some well placed braces and you can minimize wear by thinking through your mods. Avoid heavy stuff, like ARB Bull Bars unless you've found a way to lessen the strain of that heavy chunk of steel hanging from the nose. External tire carriers can also be pretty heavy on the back, especially with 35" tires. What I've seen a lot f is people putting partial exo cages on (part inner part exo) and using that to mount heavier things like tire carriers to. I know of a quite afew guys who run some pretty gnarly trails with some pretty big setups (6-8"lifts , 35-37" tires)
